Hello everyone! I don't collect by errors or anything, so when I saw this particular coin, I thought it'd be better to take it to the experts (you all ). You see those two "bumps" along the corners of the coin? Is this an error? What kind of error is it? I don't particularly collect error coins, so how much would this error make the coin worth (if it is an error)? Thanks in advance! Edited by Babar 09/29/2012 5:06 pm

Yes it is an error - it is effectively rust on the steel which occurred before it was plated. Quite common on UK 1p and 2p unfortunately - though I've not seen any new plated steel 5p / 10p coins with that problem.

Quote: along the corners of the coin? LOL the coin is round ... where are the corners? It would be helpful to show a photo of the reverse as well. David

Round things can have corners! Heh....I didn't know what else to call it..."Edge" means the bit with the reeding. Rim? Here's the other side nickelsearcher...but it looks pretty normal...which is why I hadn't shown it before: And thanks for the info, andy! Shame about it being so common...

not that common - but as an error not that unusual.

It happens on the 5p too. Check out the goatee beard on her majesty.

the 5p error is very nice! but it's not technically the same error - although it looks very similar. The 5p has an extra lump of metal (a Cud) - the 1p has rust on the steel blank that has bubbled up through the plating - two different causes with similar results.

Is there a name for the error (the original one involving rust, not what Mason asked, although that extra knowledge would be useful too, I guess)?
Or should I just call it "pre-plating rust related"?

When an indent (i.e., damage) occurs on the working die this creates a raised piece of metal on the coin (i.e., Cud) after striking (as in your coin). No real value unless the Cud is much larger. Spend it. John Lorenzo United States
