There is PMD on the second 8, but it still looks kind of off. Any ideas? To me it seems that the PMD couln't have altered the 8 that much, and the 5 stands out in an odd fashion... Or am I just over analyzing the coin? Can't take any better pictures, since it's not my coin. Edited by epikur 09/30/2012 4:36 pm

pmd. I think the 8 being how it is makes the 5 look strange because it looks like the 5 is further than it should be

The shallowness of the legends and portions of the date could be due to a " Grease Filled Die". This is when grease and metal particles fill depressions in the die and prevent the coin from being struck fully.

The reason that the last '8' looks funny is because it is a '9'. That is an 1895 IHC. The last feather points between the C and A in America. If it was an 1885 it would point between the I and C.

Nice coin and thanks for sharing. It is possible that certain digits were not punched into the die completely, leaving them looking flat or worn. One example of this is the 1888 S27, where both of the 8's are extremely shallow. However, that variety is desirable because it has a misplaced digit at the end of Liberty's ribbon, and not because the date is weak.
In fact, your coin looks like it might be the 1895/5 S12, which is listed as very scarce and contains a very weak 9. I would need good photos of the 5 to be able to determine, but it seems to have the correct date position.
*Edit: Replaced hubbed with punched.

No problem! One would not have access to the info I posted unless they own the Snow guides. But I'm trying to pass little nuggets of knowledge on to the rest of the CC! If you are an IHC collector, it will be your best investment. Cheers!

Thanks for posting, and good job on the photos. Does not appear to be the S12, which has a pretty obvious repunch showing on the inside loop of the 5. Good eye and happy hunting!

The coin almost looks like the 9 is stamped over a 8. Also on the side of the 9 it looks like a number between the 9 and the 5
