This afternoon, a USM Rep. at the order taking facility in Indiana told me that her sales figure for the 2012S PF Two- Coin Set was 363,440 (Up from the 251,000 odometer figure). This may not be reliable information so take it with a large bag of salt. There is no confirmation that this sales figure is correct. There maybe an article in a future NN paper about these sets, so I have heard. I have not contacted any numismatic publication. Comments please.....

Maybe it was 363,440 COINS or 181,720 sets? I like the sound of that much better ( wishful thinking )

P.s. I did the math without taking my shoes off! Lol

Either the odometer was grossly inaccurate all the way through, or the rep is smoking really good stuff. There is just no way they got orders for 100K+ sets in the last few hours of the last day. If that had happened, the site would have crashed as it did on the first day, when they processed less than 85K sets.

Its entirely possible the site tracker was just off the whole time as it did say it was an estimate. Its also possible thats how many sets theyve shipped when you include all the sets returned for new sets which wouldnt make the total mintage any higher after they melt the returns down

If that's true I'm glad I canceled my second set. But I'm a bit skeptical that the mint would have been that far off. I mean its a government operation, they're always right. Right?

Here are my comments:

1. Be prepared to back that up your statements before you post, please. I realize you said "grain of salt" and caveat emptor and all but this is how rumors become gospel.
2. Who is this rep and how can we reach out to her to verify?
3. Why would she tell you this?
4. Why is this the first we've heard of this inflated number after sales have been concluded for 2+ months now?

Come now. We need more information if we are to believe this claim. At this point I have no more reason to believe you than the "odometer" on the mint site. In fact, far less.

Hey, if I sound bitter, it's just because I bought 3 sets and I want to keep believing that my coins are 1 of 250k. ;)

The latest (unchanged) report of sales published by the Mint was 251,302 sets.

If one has any common sense one would think, that because of cancellations, this will decrease when the audited final numbers are released.

To say the mintage INCREASED by over 100k makes absolutely no sense at all. It's like overhearing "I heard they actually sold a million sets but only reported 251k to the public". It just makes no sense for anyone to actually put that in print...

Oh, and even the title to your thread makes no sense. Last year's set was a 25th Annie set

There is no way that number is accurate. If it was, it would mean the Mint's odometer was off by almost 50% and they'd lose all credibility if they ever use this selling strategy again. Not to mention it would anger a lot of people who are already ticked from tne Coin and Currency Set issue. Also, with just 37k sets graded by NGC and PCGS so far, I'd bet the number is a lot lower than 251k than a lot higher. I sure hope we get a final number sometime in November.

I wonder if that includes the regular proofs in the 75 Anniversary set?

If you mean W 2012 proofs I don't think so since the latest report (last week) showed 733,255 sold

If you mean the Coin & Currency set then that would be closer but still way off...40,357

In the same weekly report 251,302 for the SF set still stands

I do find it strange that they update ALL the other coins for sale but not the SF set numbers

I think we can safely chalk this one up as bogus.

I am not sure what you all mean by this. For one thing, the SF set is not for sale anymore, so what's to update? If you mean that you wonder why they don't publish weekly cancellations, I am not sure that they have ever done that for a product that had gone off sale. Apparently, they did promise to publish the final total shortly after all is said and done so we don't have long to wait for it. Sure, we all want to know how many returns (for credit or replacement) there have been and how many flat out cancellations have taken place but that is just not something the mint is in the habit of publishing, at least not in real time. They spoiled us with the daily counter of sets sold but there has been no information at all about how many sets have shipped.

There were 251,302 sets ordered so the final number sold will be something less than that. From the sound of things, that number could be quite a bit less. I have to wonder just how much of what to me looks like a lot of people returning every coin that is not perfect the mint is going to put up with and what sort of policy change might come of it. Allowing that to happen gets very expensive since all returned coins, no matter what the reason, get destroyed (as long as the packaging was opened, which is almost all returns). My fourth and fifth sets will leave the mint later today and get to me on Friday (the mint says they shipped on Tuesday but that is not true). I will open them and report on quality as this seems of special interest for the coins in this set. If I find any issues, I will go ahead and open the two FS eligible sets I have to see what they are like. My last two sets are yet to go "in stock".

I would think this would be kind of a unique issue since they sold out months ago but have not all be shipped. It is a very fluid situation with a known starting number (251k) that is changing as returns and cancellations make themselves known.

Most sold out items are marked as such and the remaining items ship in a reasonable time period. This one sold out and THEN a second batch was minted to fill the remaining orders...not a normal progression.

My opinion .... you do not have to agree.
