Does any know how many of the US Mint issued souvenir sets were issued in 1982 and 1983? They seem to get pretty good prices on ebay but I wonder how scarce they actually are. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Most souvenir sets are of liw mintage, including the 82 / 83, but this isn't why they are so expensive. There were no mint sets for the year and few (relatively) were saved from circulating.

I'm aware that no mint set were made in those years, I'm just wondering how many of the souvenir set were made.

I don't know if he is active on this forum but cladking is the person you are looking for. I know I have seen the mintage figures posted. And the 82 and 83 sets actually have some of the highest mintages of the souvenir sets. But their price is high because they are the only way to get official sets of the 82 and 83 coins. The mint sets available for all other years keeps the price down on the other souvenir sets.

I think any numbers out there are only estimates; if cladking stops by his would probably be the most accurate.

I can't vouch for the numbers but I have a newspaper clipping that was with some '83 souvenir sets I bought back in the mid-'80's that has an address at the mint to obtain these sets and the mintage figures. The article was physically cut from a newspaper so the name of the paper is unknown. This souce lists the mintages as;
'82-P...10,000 '82-D...15,000 '83-P...10,000 '83-D...20,000
Frankly these seem a little low to me. Later mintages were much higher and earlier ones are mostly unknown and/ or unsubstantiated. Yet when I actually see these sets they tend to be older ones and 1987's.

Are the mintages listed in any coin books, like the Red Book? I don't have one in front of me to check.

Cladking: Looks as though the '84 has a lower mintage than the '82 and '83. Are there any figures for '72 and up in regards to the souvenir sets?

No, not much.
There is supposedly a 1971 in existence but it's very scarce if it does.
I've seen a mintage reported of "400" for both the '72-P and D sets but this seems slightly low compared to the frequency with which I encounter them. Mostl;y these sets were made in batches of a few thousand as they were needed. They were primarily intended as a curtesy to mint visitors and were not designed for profit. Coin quality is very good for regular production coins but these are not up to mint set standards.

Did some looking and couldn't come up with mintages, but I did find that Coin World did an article on them in the 10/29/2007 issue that included a list of mintages. The link to the article though is of course broken. You might be able to contact Coin World though and get the information.

I have seen a few more mintages but I always record them when I see them so must have missed the article.
