This coin looks like a counterfeit.
How much did you pay?

I've hardly got anything into it. I bought it with a lot of other coins and it happened to be among them.

Vf-25/30 cleaned. @ CB, what makes you think it is counterfeit? The mouth doesn't look altogether just right.

The coin has a very "grainy" look, which makes me think it is a cast counterfeit.
This is also quite a scarce coin, which makes it even more suspicious. (In my opinion)

I was originally concerned because of the break in the stem on the top right hand side of the wreath. However, I've looked at pictures of some other 1875s and for the most part they seem weak or completely broken in this area. The lighting these pictures was less than optimal as well.

Here are a couple things I am noticing on the Reverse: Two Authentic 1875-H's Your Coin: I circled the parts that don't match up to the real coin. The denticles, and overall strike don't look right either (in my opinion)

Thanks for your help CB. Even though they used lots of letter and number punch combinations on early Victoria coinage, the differences you've pointed out are beyond the norm. I'm soon sending a bunch of coins to PCGS for grading so I'll include this one among them. I'll make sure to post the results here. If it does come back as fake I'll destroy it so no one else ever ends up with it.

Quote: I'm soon sending a bunch of coins to PCGS for grading so I'll include this one among them. That's a good idea, don't forget to post an update. I think before you spend them money to have it graded, you should wait for a couple more people to give an opinion. I think there was only one reverse die used for the 1875-H.

Sure does NOT look real to me . If I was offered that coin the first question I need answered is "why is it NOt certified" Send it to ICCS with a twenty and it will be back in a week.

For what it's worth I weighed it. It's 2.31 grams, so a tad under the 2.33 it's supposed to be but still within tolerance I think. I also passed a magnet over it and it passed that test. Even so, the other evidence against it is quite compelling. I'm guessing the reason it was never certified is because it belonged to an elderly couple who were just casual collectors. He died many years ago and she just passed away recently. Among the coins I bought at the estate sale were almost $10 face value of Victoria 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents. None of them were keys (except the 1875 10 cents) and all were just tossed loosely in a ceramic jar. I only paid slightly above melt for the jar so if the 10 cents is a fake I'm not out a lot of money on it.

With CB's photos, looking at the date, the 1 and the 7 don't seem just right but, it did pass the 'magnet' test. I also agree with 54dollar, if you are sending it in for grading send it to a Canadian grading company, like CCCS or ICCS.

Very obvious Chinese fake.
I keep saying forget about the numerals and markers.
LOOK at the 'graininess' of the surface.
The 'pebbly' look of the tops of the surfaces.
This to me is the true tell-tale sign (and the easiest way) of spotting a Chinese fake.
