I was given this in my change many years ago. I came across it again today and was wondering exactly what it was. I is a quarter but it is hollow inside and is in two pieces. Is it some prototype or something?

It has been known by several names during it's existance, and one of these is a 'Magician or Wizards' coin.
They are hollowed out on a machine lathe and fit todather with the second piece so that they uaually fit rather nicely togather. The slight of hand tricks were where these coins got their start and now you have found one. They are rather interesting, so enjoy!

I was also thinking a spy coin, but Old Dan's explanation makes more sense.

I thought a Magician's coin would have two of the same sides? This one has the normal two different sides.

The whole spy coin thing was a myth.
My dad told me about an alleged one during his days as a paper boy.

You can pick them up rather cheaply at magic supply stores. They come in many different denominations, depending on the magic trick. I use one very similiar but it is a Kennedy half.

It's a Magician's coin. Curiously, some numismatists say they have no collector value, but in reality, these do cost at least a couple of bucks. Go and try to buy one!

There are also "box dollars", which are similarly hollowed-out silver dollars (typically Trade dollars, but also frequently Morgan dollars, and very rarely, Peace dollars), but those were used to smuggle drugs (opium, etc). They are very popular and worth quite a bit more than a Magician's coin.

Cool find!
