Hello, I am an elementary coin collector of US coins. There are two coins that I don't know the mint place(s) of them. Can you tell me where the mint mark is on the coin(s) if any. Thanks for your help.

The Peace dollar has no mint mark indicating it is from the Philadelphia mint. Not sure where the mint mark on the other coin should be but I would venture a guess that if there isn't one it is from Philadelphia as well.

There was only one US mint in 1813. The first branch mints didn't open until 1838.

Thank you, Williamsonj320. Yes, Sap you are right, the first branch was set up exactly in 1838 so the 1813 50Cents was minted in Philadelphia also.

That is correct. The New Orleans mint opened in 1838.

According to "Hidden Values in Coins" by Burton Hobson, the first and second branch were Dahlonega and Charlotte mints, both began operations in 1838. New Orleans Mint was the third branch, also began in 1838.

In a majority of cases, if the coin doesn't have a mintmark it was minted in Philadelphia. There are exceptions though like one specific die pairing of the 1840 half dollar and some of the coins minted between 1965-1967. The Capped Bust half dollar with the lettered edge did not have any mintmarks while some of the ones with the reeded edge have an "O" above the date. The mintmark on the Peace dollar is under the one on the reverse.

Every US coin without a MM was minted in Philadelphia. Some Philadelphia coins do have a MM like the special ASE's and a hand full of others but if there is no mint mark at all you know right off the bat that it was minted in Philadelphia

Correct. Mint marks were withheld from the coins minted Denver and San Francisco during this time.

Bryan, reread Doubleeagle's post again because he is correct. The 1840 no mintmark medium letter half dollar was struck in New Orleans. (The reverse die was a leftover capped bust half die and was used to strike 1839-O half dollars. Die cracks match it up perfectly on both years issues.) And in 1965 to 67 none of the mints used mintmarks but some of the coin issued were not struck in Philadelphia at all. No 1966 or 1967 nickels were struck in Philadelphia. No 1965, 66, or 67 halves were struck in Philadelphia. In fact ALL of the 1967 no mintmark halves were struck in Denver.
