Hi, Hoping I can get some opinions on what nay have happend to this 1973 Lincon penny. The obvious damage is the circular rim clip and the black pit in the center. I thought at one point the penny may have been the target for a .22 but I don't see any metal transfer (mind you I'm not a metallurgist or a numismatic expert) but I don't see any lead or metal transfer I can clearly see were the letters from the word trust flow toward the clip and the letter "T" on cent is not completely formed along with what appears to be a light strike for the words united states.
The pit in the middle I have no idea, if someone can explain to me what the black growth is and what causes it I would be very happy to learn as a beginner I did not want to scrape or clean it but want to know more
YEA ! I won something. Struck out with the two coins I already posted so I'll take the consolation prize and be happy. I have another penny I'm going to post soon not sure if PMD or not.
I'm still learning so my thought is if I provide enough information and pics some more experienced eyes than me will see what I may have missed.
Also you should get familiar with the process of minting coins. Then when you learn of different errors/varieties you can understand how they are made.
