The hardest part is trying to find nice coins for the grade, at a reasonable price. I think I have mentioned this before in the thread, but I want coins without any toning. That way, there are no boosts/deductions from nice/ugly toning. It also makes it easier to see all the details, and how wear detracts from the grade. Basically, the goal is to put together a physical grading guide, that clearly shows how the Morgan dollar circulated.

I think the idea is awesome in many ways. One being I just love morgans and anything to do with them. I think having one graded from p-ms will be not only interesting to look at, but I know for someone like me it would be invaluable to learn how to properly grade a Morgan. It's like photo grade but the real thing. So its a big challenge? Thats should make it fun. Life is full of challenges. The only down side is finding a coin you need ,in that grade raw, and having to send it in and pay for it to be graded. Awesome idea and good luck

Quote: I agree, I think its a great and unique idea. I think if you picked a year like 78 or 21 you would be able to do it without too much trouble. If you were going to use 1921, it would have to be the '21-D. It's the only mm (from 1921) that has a full population from PO-01 to MS-67. Quote: The only down side is finding a coin you need ,in that grade raw, and having to send it in and pay for it to be graded. Awesome idea and good luck I generally try and buy coins that have already been graded, just to avoid the extra expense. This set will take me a while to complete, but I am not going to rush it. The thrill of the hunt is just as nice as the coins themselves.

I finally get to update this thread again, I've been meaning to post this coin for a while. I picked up a MS-63 for the set. There is a die chip on the Eagles breast, I will post full-size pictures of the coin in the VAM section of the forum, too see if I can get any more information. http://goccf.com/t/194194Hopefully, I can continue to add some more coins in 2015. [Edit: Added link to VAM thread]

You know, I've just had a sort of an epiphany here. Images as large and clear as yours, shown on a big, high resolution smartphone screen (I have an LG G3), may be the sweet spot for grading from images. It banishes the analysis paralysis of seeing every nick on a big monitor while having the resolution to show every detail. I've been seeing this with Heritage stuff, and I really like it.
Edit to add: Looks like the VAM-28 reverse, but I don't see the scratch on the wing.

Nice '78-S! I'll wait for your post in the VAM section before I offer a VAM guess.

Thanks for all the compliments on the pictures. Quote: Any time you want to walk the path he did, we can teach you to duplicate his results. Just be warned, coin photography can turn into an addiction pretty quickly.

I've always wanted to have pictures of all my coins neatly organized, but that'd require a camera. I'll definitely be looking into it!

Very nice. I love dark, circulated Morgans. They're easy to photograph too.
