What would you do with 150 pounds of raw silver ore assayed at 80%? Try to sell it to a mineral dealer or just refine it? I am new to all of this and looking for suggestions :) Not like I actually have a 150 pound silver nugget or anything.. ;) Edited by silverore 10/10/2012 9:56 pm

"Oh Boy, I'm Rich! Rich Rich Rich I tell ya.....RICH!" No, just kidding! I really don't know. Hopefully somebody here at CCF will have ideas. There are videos on YouTube that describe home refining, but as far as I know they are small scale. 150 lbs. is not small scale!

Id sell it. Home refining wont be easy and probably not even worth the time and effort when its said and done. Unless of course you do that often or have a smelter laying around

On refining it at home......1-Could you?......2-How good a job could you do?...... 3-(even if you get this far, here's the killer)-What do you do then--set up your own home foundry and mini-mint in the still-open part of the basement so you could pour your own bars or strike your own coins?
I think I'd go with having the pro's do the work they do on a commercial basis.

Let me crunch some numbers... WOW! At current silver prices, 150lbs. of 80% silver comes out to $67,200! You could probably sell it to someone for about 60,000, unrefined. Try selling it to either a museum or big jewelry manufacturer. Just think of places that are able to smelt it and sell it or someone that will leave it just the way it is. Well, that's my 2 cents. Hope it helped!

Silverore, are you referring to that huge 153 pound slab recently unearthed by a detectorist? Pics sure look like that same nugget.

Namachieli, it was first posted on the treasurenet forum. It was discovered by a metal detectorist. I agree it would be better kept as a specimen since pieces like this are rare these days but who has 60k on them? The large piece on the bottom is the one that weighs about 153 lbs.

you should contact moore numismatic auction, they auctioned off a bunch of large gold nuggets for decent prices in june 2012. I almost sure you will get more than 100,000 at auction for this chunk. 925 9307710 or heritage auctions in dallas, texas. good luck send me alittle chunk after you sell it.
