Quote: I would stay away from currency I often wonder why some will tell others that something is not good .. and give no reason or explanation. This is a question for a rare note .. posted in the currency section .. with a member wanting to know information that may help make a offer on. I think this is a pretty nice looking note. The S/N falls into the correct range for a authentic note. To me, I see where the bill has at one time has been folded in the center and a fold line on one of the corners. I don't like giving someone a grade from a picture .. but I could see this note being in the XF range. But I am far from a expert of grading notes. Dealer green sheet list the value (dealer to dealer) XF ask $95.00 AU ask $120.00 My small size currency guide 10th edition VF $125 CH CU $550 (it does not list XF or AU grade prices) These are hard notes to find, ever harder in higher grades. For me, when I find a note I really want I don't mind paying a little more for it. But I would like to get this note for a little less then listed price. Edit .. P.S. I would suggest checking out some completed listing on ebay, for this note, and see what price range similar notes are selling for.

Coinguy1000 .. posting your opinion and saying you have heard people have lost money on currency is a good word of caution. But all you posted was "I would stay away from currency" and no other opinion at that time .. that was why I responded.
In my experience I have seen many make and lose money on coins .. and many other collectibles. That does not make me want to tell people not to buy coins. BTW I am much more into coins than notes .. notes for me are just fun for right now.
For me .. a mistake I have made is not buying more currency many years ago .. also much more silver and gold.
In the past several months I have seen some big currency transactions. Three notes sold for $30.000 and one note sold for over $50.000. When I had the $50,000 dollar note in hand .. I was not impressed at all. I was very impressed when it sold so high the next day.

Things like this always amaze me. We have a coin guy in the Currency section of the forum telling maybe a new Currency collector to stay away from Currency.
Things must be slow over in the coin section.
Having an opinion is one thing, but I don't think telling someone asking a question about a coin to stay away from coins would go over very well in the coin section of the forum.
I have a lot of coins but don't collect them, been trading them off for Currency, for me coins are just to cold and metallic like, and are not warm and colorful like Currency, would be very happy if I could get rid of all of my coins for US Paper Money.
But I am not about to go over to the coin section and tell anyone anything about how I feel about those lifeless metal discs. It's just not a nice thing to do.
bobbart, That R experimental looks like a very nice note, it may be a little pricey but not knowing the exact condition it's hard to say for sure.
As far as losing money on coins, Currency, or any other collectors item, you are in complete control of that, and if it bothers some guys maybe they should not collect anything.
Please don't forget, collecting is not about buying something and flipping it for a quick profit off your fellow collectors, in my opinion that's called "dealing" not collecting. Bill Collector

Being a collector of both coins and currency I would say you may end up losing money on either one of your choice. But to some, collecting is just for enjoyment not to make a profit.
But getting back on topic. Looking at the scan on that auction I would say the note is around XF. And it does seem to be stained.

Quote: I wish it was graded. You may have answered your own question...here's why If you look at the reverse image closely there is a Hard center fold with some sort of discoloration. Not sure if that's what comet is referring to or not...although I do not collect these type of notes...something tells me to stay away from this "particular" note. One good thing here is the sellers return policy...So if you buy it and it looks iffy in hand I would return it.

Quote: Comet...can you please point where the stain is on the note. I agree with Ceylon, that there is some stain/discoloration on the reverse center fold. And maybe some going from the eye of the pyramid to the "O" in "one". Also overall the color is not original, as a new note would have. I see this mostly on the borders. I am not trying to run down this note, just point out what I see. I still feel this is a very hard note to find. IMO, in the top seven silver certificates, for $1.00 notes. I would not know how to put them in order, I think the top seven $1.00 silver certificates are. 1928 E 1928 D 1928 C 1935 A Red S 1935 A Red R 1935 A Hawaii 1935 A North Africa I forgot the 1928 B experimental note would be in the group also .. might have to change to top eight ...

You could make a offer ...seller has that option I am am thinking $140 or $150. You never know what he will take. Last week on ebay seller had a Lincoln Cent. he started out asking $290, he went Down to $275. I offered $220 and he took it right away.

Agree with what Ceylon says. But I see even more discoloration, which is at the top edge of the note running across. You can see on both obverse and reverse that there are brown spots on it. Its not worth it unless the seller is willing to drop the price down considerably lower.
