I was at my local flea market today where there are 2 coin coin guys that set up regularly. They've had stuff stolen in the past.....for the most part small stuff. But I came to find out that someone followed both of them home after a local coin club meeting and wiped out everything they had.....both around 25k each in inventory stolen....They've since retired from the flea market (can't blame them) and I found out neither carried any extra insurance on their homeowners to cover these collectibles. It's really a shame. Both of these guys are retired and have done this to make a little extra cash month to month.

That's really sickening. My favorite dealer is at the local flea market. It would be a shame if he quit like that.

Are police working on catching the thief? Are there any leads?
It is a sign of the times and it is very sad. I wish society was more civilized, but since it is not, I believe any non-felon should be able to obtain a concealed weapons permit. Might have at least scared away the individual(s) responsible in this case....or potentially removed someone from society that we could afford to lose in case the elderly dealers are attacked.

This is actually a pretty popular robbery tactic now unfortunately. In the DC area where I live some buyers have been targeted too.
About the only tips I can offer would be keep your purchases hidden, dont walk out with a giant box of things if possible. Dont go straight home if you live in a semi or remote area, and pick and choose the shows you go too. Here in DC theres one in a part of Northern VA thats not the greatest area and thats the one people usually get targeted at.

It really is a shame. The police are involved however I do not know if they have any leads. The really bad part is they had no insurance. I'm actually an insurance agent and advise everyone in my coin club to contact their agent to get a little added coverage....fairly inexpensive.....and now I'm doing the same with you all. May be worth making a call to your agent and find out if you actually have any coverage in the even of theft....or even if your house were to burn down.....you may be surprised at their response with coverage for collectibles. All states vary so I can only speak for 2, but with collectibles there may be no replacement cost under your home policy if there is a fire or theft.

thieves abound, sellers beware. Its a sad fact of life there are folks that will abd have stole the dimes from a dead mans eyes. I also lost well over 10 grand in coins this past winter, the chances of the police recovering coins are very slim. Coins are just to easy to alter, sell or even melt; I for one think thievs are as big a threat to the coin collecting hobby as are those that fake and sell these fakes.

I am very careful of who is following me when I leave a coin show or a flea market. When I notice that someone may be following me I always drive past where I would normally turn to go home and drive an extra couple of miles and when I am certain they have either given up on me or it was just a coincidence they were making the same turns I was then I go home. A couple of times I have even stopped and got out of my vehicle to confront a person I suspected of following me and they took off rather quickly once they noticed the KABAR in my hand. Why do people even need permits to protect their lives and livelyhood? It's a human right not to be victimized for any reason. Just keep your eyes peeled and don't be an easy target. Always keep a notepad on you.

Awful. One reason I'd probably never become a dealer.

I recommend a safety deposit box at the bank. Far cheaper than insurance. And if your house was to burn down or get robbed, you would probably have to end up suing the insurance company to get them to pay you back. That is my experience.

Quote: Why do people even need permits to protect their lives and livelyhood? You do not need a permit to have or even have a gun with you as long as you are (I think 21, used to be 18) here in NC, you just have to have a permit to buy and conceal

Quote: I am sooo glad I live where I do and don't have to resort to the use of a firearm to protect what is mine I personally know someone who lives near Brisbane (I think) that was just robbed. Not robbed of coins, but robbed. In any event, some people think Americans are just shooting each other left and right. It's not that bad, but extra protection, in the form of firearms, is nice. Almost nobody ever has to use them (on another person at least), but it gives people piece of mind. To be fair, many in America don't support that point of view, however I do personally.
