Just got back from a trip to south east asia, went to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand and I'd like to share my findings with you all.

I managed to get a few decent notes in southern Vietnam, but it wasn't easy, most banks said they didn't have UNC notes.

In Cambodia it was a piece of cake, most money exchangers in Phnom Pehn have packs of UNC notes.

In Thailand I was able to get an UNC note at the first bank I visited.

Here are the notes:

Surprised you didn't pick up more. Do you only collect UNC?
Interestingly on the Vietnam low denomination notes are they still in circulation? They must be virtually worthless.

In Vietnam I tried to get more, but I had visited so many banks already, and none had UNC notes so I stopped trying. Only one bank teller was kind enough to check for me and came up with some XF/aUNC/UNC low denom notes. In Cambodia, I already have some UNC notes I got from there last year, so I was good. The only one I think I didn't have was the 100,000 riel note. However, they don't have them in UNC condition anymore at the national bank of Cambodia, I checked. I don't really collect Thailand money, but these commemoratives were outstanding to me so I wanted to get some. Oh and I forgot, I was able to get this at an HSBC in Ho Chi Minh city:

I think it may have been easier if I would've been in Hanoi. I would've tried the State Bank of Vietnam there. Yes these low denom banknotes I posted are quite worthless, worth between 0.02$ and 0.09$. The 500 dong note I have not seen in circulation before I got it from the bank. The others, 1000 and 2000 are actually quite common to find in your change.

Yes I only collect UNC notes, unless you know, there are too few available because the note is so rare. For a note to have an appeal to me it has to be UNC.

I see that Cambodia's king just died today, so these might go out of circulation within a year or two anyway!

The previous king (Norodom Sihanouk) abdicated in favour of his son (Norodom Sihamoni) in 2004.

Although the old king still features on some banknotes his son (as far as I know) has not appeared on any.

As for the Vietnamese notes the vast majority are now polymer but can be distinguished for their year of issue bt the first two numbers of the serial number.

Yeah, I hadn't read about it until this morning, another former monarch to die in China, I think Tonga's king died here 6 months back.

Norodom Sihamoni is on the 20,000 riel 2008, they most likely will change the design when issued run out.

Nice notes, I've been to Vietnam several times but never seen the 500 Dong note. Surprised you didn't get the 500,000 Dong note.

Welcome to the community terchua.

I think the 500 dong note is more of a novelty now (and more for tourists). It's worth about US$0.02 cents!

Thanks thai-vic. At approximate exchange rate of 17,000dong to 1$, it's actually worth $0.02, not cents!

I have the 500 viet nam note uncirculated. My 1000 is slightly circulated from 1988.
I also have the 1972 500, and the 1985 5 uncirculated.
They are very pretty notes. I haven't pulled them out in years.
The polymer is very nice as well.
