In the past 20 years of getting change and working at jobs that deals with lots of change, I have only found a single Buffalo nickel. I think your best bet would be to go buy a full roll for maybe $10.

I agree. My wife and I searched thousands of nickels in order to complete our Jefferson sets, and we never saw a Buffalo nickel.

In the last year my son and daughter have pulled 4 Buffalo nickels out of their cash drawers at work. All were common dates in VG-F condition.

Ok thanks, I just got to thinking about it, cause I bought $200 worth of nickels from my work and went threw them all, I found some really nice things from the 40's and 50's, and a few more coins to put in to my collection. I just want to start doing the Buffalo nickels but my goal at the moment is to try and complete my collections with out paying more than face value for the coin. I'm sure that I can't do that for ever, but maybe I'll get my Jefferson nickels completed that way.

The last circulating Buffalo nickels that I can recall were typically either really common dates/mint marks, or were so badly worn that the dates were no longer legible. This is primarily from the early sixties. By the time I got home from being stationed in Germany in the mid-70's I don't think I saw more than a couple of examples of the Buffalo nickel in circulation. I suspect the only way you'll find one nowdays in common circulation is if somebody's collection is misappropriated or out-and-out stolen and "liquidated" for more desirable consumer goods. (Booze, drugs, food?) Such coins won't pass through very many hands, though, before they are removed once more from circulation! All IMHO, naturally!

I haven't found any in my registers in the last 14 years that I have owned my store. Try at an estate sale if they have an old jar or can of coins, my son in law bought a can at an auction and found several semi key coins in it.

You really need to purchase them if you want them. I know some are in circulation in our area because when we get very worn common dates or dateless ones, we put them back into circulation. We done the same with some Indian Head cents also. I doubt they stay in circulation long, though.

I have to agree with Gary, I also have searched thousands of rolls of Jefferson nickels and not one Buffalo nickel, and never got one in change every. Bruce.

My father came across one in change but I've never seen them in circulation.

If I find a dateless buffalo I just spend it or wrap it when I'm doing rolls.
