I just purchased a San Diego Commemorative Half for my 7070 and would like to hear what the CCF has to say about it in comparison to this 1st Generation PCGS slab. Does anyone think that these earlier slabs are under/overgraded or about the same as today's comparisons?

Thanks as always!

This why I asked about the over/under grading of older slabs;

I may have seen half-a-dozen "Gold CAC" stickers, which means that the coin is undergraded, in Certified Acceptance Corporation opinion.

Here is a little blurp that I found on CAC;

"Certified coins with CAC stickers have commanded bonus premiums because of the generally accepted perception that they are superior to 'unstickered' coins in the same grade " and coins with gold stickers have been selling for significantly more, often several times as much as coins of the same type, date, and grade that lack a CAC sticker."
"The green CAC are bringing 5 to 15 percent more on average, and coins with gold stickers are selling for roughly 80% to 90% percent as much as those already certified in the next higher grade."

I guess depending on eye appeal.

I have seen San Diego Commem coins with better luster in MS-63 grade, perhaps is the photo. Hope you got a good deal out of it!

I have heard that the old PCGS coins are usually undergraded. They were stricter in grading back then.

I don't believe there is a "hard and fast" rule about whether these old PCGS holders contain over- or under-graded coins -- I've personally seen coins that could be used as evidence for either side of the argument.

Keep in mind, however, that there is very little spread between the market price for an MS-63 example of a 1935-S San Diego and an MS-65 coin. I have found that it can often be easier to resubmit such a "tight spread" coin and have it upgrade a point or two vs. doing the same for a coin that doubles or triples in value as it moves up a grade or two.

It's hard to tell based on the posted images how much of an upgrade CAC would expect if re-submitted, but it does not appear to me that the grade would go up enough to merit a selling price "...several times as much as coins of the same type, date, and grade that lack a [gold] CAC sticker..."

Just my thoughts...

I do not plan on resubmitting this for a possible higher grade. I will be able to better assess the holder once in-hand for structural integrity...besides, I did not have a Gold CAC coin, and this one was reasonably priced.

This coin also appears not to the abraded right knee that seems to be most of the ones that I have seen/considered.
