Speaking of all dried up...I've gone over many a roll of pennies and have yet to see an Indian cent. I'm sure there are a few out there still but how rare is it to find one today in a bank roll? 1 per every 10 boxes? 20, 50 100?

1 per 10 boxes probably. Those will be culls too. I think there are probably 0 of them left circulating from their mintage years, but sometimes other collectors throw culls into circulation when they are worth nothing and they don't want them. I haven't specifically done that with IHCs, but I've put over 100 Buffalo nickels in circulation...mostly garbage though.

I found an Indian cent and 2 Buffalo nickels a couple months ago. The word "Liberty" was totally gone from the band on the Indians headdress and the dates were totally gone from both Buffs, so the poor old things didn't even make the grade of 04-Good. Kind of took the joy out of finding an actual Indian and Buffs! Having now heard the tale of how hunter/collectors will toss the occasional bottom-end old Indian or Buff back into the circulating coin pool just to yank somebody's chain, I think I'll toss my Indian and 2 Buffs back out into the pool and keep the tradition alive.

The odds of an Indian are way less than 1 in 10 boxes unless you are extremely lucky, if that was the case I would find 1 every two weeks. I have found 4 so far, 1 shortly after starting last year and 3 this year. I go through about 5 boxes a week. So I have gone through about 200 boxes and found 3 this year. I have seen someone post that they had found 9 in one box, that would definitely raise that persons average, but unless you are very lucky, much less than 1 in 10.

Ive never found any indians in cirulation. And I keep any coin I collect because maybe, just maybe, theyll all be worth a fortune, no matter the condition.

I found my only roll Indian in like my 5th box. The only other one I ahve that I didnt pay for was in the parking lot of a gas station. To be fair, it is so terribly damaged that the only reason I can tell that it was an indian as one point is from the wreath shape on the back. There is no hope of seeing a date. Edit.. just thought about this.. I have been through about 2 times more dime boxes than cents, and I have found 4 Mercury dimes. Interesting to think that they are more common in circulation still than Indians.

Quite the opposite really..I would think it would be exciting for someone else (collector or not) to find one. I also should define what I meant by garbage. I simply meant a buffalo that I can't sell and I don't want personally. Any buffalo I have that is corroded or otherwise really really bad I throw in the garbage. I have put full date VG coins from the 30's, some partial date AG semi-keys like 23-S and 25-S in circulation. I actually threw a 14-D in once. It was a restored date and it was extremely weak, but still a 14-D. As far as IHCs, I've only found 1 and I've searched about 10 boxes so I guessed 1/10. Of coarse, I might search another 50 boxes and not find another so who knows.

Not really surprising to me, considering that the last IHC was minted seven years before the first Mercury dime. Then again, if the silver content is a factor, I think I understand what you mean.

I have been through around 20 boxes and have yet to find an indian. I have done about the same with dimes and have not found a Mercury dime yet. As for buffs I probably average two per box I have boxes with none but then I will get a box with a few in it.

I suppose you're right.. It would be more akin to finding a Barber coin in a roll. Is the V nickel considered a Barber?
