I have just become the proud owner of an 1816 1c coin - only VG I think, but still a lovely piece of history to own.

Looking at your coin facts I believe it should have coin orientation. However, when Liberty's head is upright, spinning the coin round it's vertical axis reveals the top of the reverse in the 10 o'clock position instead of 6 o'clock. Is this normal for these?

Thanks in advance.

Normally all US coins are supposed to be in coin orientation but any issue can have a rotated dies. In some cases a particular variety will be known for rotated dies. (For example 1807 S-276 almost always comes with the dies rotated 180 degrees, it also comes with two other commonly seen rotations but can be found rotated to any degree.) Just checked through the Holmes collection and it seems N-2, N-7, and N-8 all seem to commonly come with a rotated reverse. N-2 seems to be rotated in the wrong direction and not as much as your coin. N-7 or 8 seem to be better possibilities. None of those three varieties are rare. If you can post pictures we should be able to attribute it.

The white mark beside the back of Liberty's head shows where is the top of the reverse.

The S-276 mentioned above, is considered an R1, very commonly found with substantial rotation.
According to rotateddies.com, most 1816's, are clockwise rotation, and yours appears to fall into that category.

OK, it isn't N-7 or 8, with the pictures it attributes as 1816 N-2 R-1.

Indeed relatively common as you have it, indeed a fantastic piece of history to have in your hands.
