A few days ago I purchased a 1996 P & D mint set including the 1996-W Roosevelt dime. From what I gather, they only made 47,000 of these dimes. It also appears they can do very well on the Bay if slabbed & graded. My question is: If you had this coin, would you send it in for grading or keep it in the sealed wrapper from the mint? I have no planes for selling it until later on in the future. Also, I only paid 2.25 for this set. I only paid what he was asking and at the time of purchase I knew nothing about the 1996-W dime. Thanks for your help and advise.

Awesome buy for $2.25!

Does he have more?

I have the 1996-W PCGS MS68 for my Roosevelt Clad coin. I also have a few Mint sets like yours (I bought 10 back in 1996 from the Mint, and have sold off most since).

I would not send in the dime for TPG, although I bought mine slabbed.

Very nice!

If you have the Roosevelt Dansco album or are building a Roosevelt set, do not hesitate to open it up and add to your collection.

I see no reason to send it in for grading. I may be wrong, but I doubt you would recover the slabbing fee versus selling it as-is.

jbuck, the prices on the Bay are all over the place but if it came back as MS68 it could bring 100 dollars plus. Definitely less than the cost of grading. The ranges on MS66-MS68 are so wide spread. Nothing etched in stone.

Your number is off a little bit, actual mintage was 1,457,000.

biokemist6, this is why I love you guys so much. I had bad Intel and read 47K. The 1.47 million makes a huge difference. That would also explain the huge range in sold prices. I'll just leave it as is and maybe send it in for grading when I get my next group of free slab & grading. I apreciate all of the help.

I have one in my Dansco Roosevlet Album, one 1996 set and I just sold another set for $15 on ebay. Because people don't always know about the dime, you can pick up cheap, like you did. Nice!

Many times you will see them on ebay without the W dime, so be careful when you research prices.

Depends on your definition of "doing well on ebay" is.

From what I see, slabbed selling between $15 and $23.50.

Is it just the low mintage that makes the 96-w sell at a premium or something else ? I just wanna learn, thanks.

BUuncirculated, ebay prices, like on most sales, tend to be all over the place. Some of the higher ones are listed below.

ebay: sold 1996-W Roosevelt dime NGC MS68 FB FT 2ND FINEST REGISTRY
MS68 254.15

ebay: sold 1996 W ICG MS 69 DIME
MS69 130.00

ebay: sold 1996-W ICG MS69 Roosevelt dime , WHITE
MS69 102.51

ebay: sold 1996 W Roosevelt dime NGC MS 68
MS68 75.00

And there are sales of them selling on the lower end of the spectrum too. But these tend to be in the MS65 and MS66 grade. No guarantees on me getting a better grade if I send it in. Another risk factor.

I know that it's a crap shoot as to what one sells for on ebay. Nothing is etched in stone. I'll just wait for the next time I re-enlist with PCGS and use the dime as one of my free grades. I'm in no hurry to grade it and I'm in no hurry to sell it. I appreciate everybodies input.

Mine is in the clad dime hole in my 7070. I think it's the lowest mintage of any clad coin, isn't it?

Yes, barely beats out the 1973-P & D Ikes at 1.76 million
