I'm relocating later this year. Any ideas on how best to move the coin collection?

I think this depends a lot on how big the collection (both in physcial size and value) is and how far you are moving. My wife and I moved from Maine to Kansas, and we just had the coins in a box in my car when we drove out. It was a medium sized box, as it's a pretty small collection. (We had professional movers take other stuff.)

Move the collection yourself, don't leave it up to the movers. I moved a few years ago and I regret not making a check list before I moved. When I got to my new house I ended up loosing some of my collection, Unfortunately I didn't realize I lost some stuff until months later.

Spider5689,
That really is some bad news. Sorry to hear about that.

I would never trust anyone with my entire collection. There is just too much stuff and way too much work and effort put into what I have. I would be sure to keep them locked up in the trunk of my car the entire move.

Move it yourself for sure, that way you know where it is all the time and you have a better chance of it not getting lost or damaged in transit. If you can get the styrofoam ice chest(s) and pack them in there it will help keep them safe and less likely to be stolen as most theives won't bother an ice chest like that. When I moved my store last fall that is how I packed the coins for transport that I sell.

I agree with everyone else. Move them with you. If you have that large of a collection that it will take up most of the space in your vehicles, look at it this way:

would you rather have clothing, etc in the back of your car that you can replace for minimal amounts of money, or a large collection of coins that would possibly take years and a lot of funds to replace.

Just my opinion of course, but I would find a way to keep them with me.

Beyond ensuring that you move the coins safely in your possession, I would suggest putting some thought into packing coins, series, etc. to keep damage to a minimum. (I'm not talking just the coins being damaged, either. Many people have put some money into display units, holders/folders, etc.)

Bubble wrap and other packing materials are available at Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. and can represent cheap insurance for prized possessions.

As pointed out earlier, it is common for things to be "misplaced" in a move. Depending on the size of your household, you may find as I did, that some boxes just don't get unpacked. This isn't too much of a problem, except for the fact that people tend to want to pack "efficiently"...so they find something to fit into that open space in the box that doesn't really "go with" what else is in the box. (Like sticking some DVD's, old bath towels, a couple of light bulbs, and some Christmas decorations into one box and labeling the outside "Christmas Decorations." It may be a long time before you ever open that box to rediscover the other items!)

Good luck!

If the collection is particularly high value and you worry about travelling with it you could ship the entire collection Registered and Insured mail to your new location. It may cost a bit, but it's probably worth it.

When my Mother in Arizona gave me her sizeable and valuable collection, we put it in an old large leather briefcase that used to be my Grandfather's and drove it back to Oklahoma. At motels we took it in with our luggage and took it with us when we left the room for meals. NEVER leave it in a car (even with an alarm) or unattended in a motel room. We made it safely and I am sure you will also. Good luck!

It is already obvious that you should move it yourself. Pending the size of the collection and the cases, boxes, safes, etc that go with the collection, you may want to consider renting a truck, large car, etc. So many rent a car/truck places and the cost is not as much as you may think. Of course you may even consider buying a hitch for your car, a small trailer and have something to use for other things later. My son moved to Tennessee and did exactly that. He used the small trailer he bought for moving all valuables and left the normal stuff to movers. If your collection will not fit in your car but could fit in a larger car, consider renting a Lincoln Town car, van or something like that. Another nice thing about the rental thing is in case something happens to the vehical while moving, they will usually come out with a replacement to where ever your at.
Someone I know that sells those little Hot Wheel Cars at flea markets told me he recently moved and hired movers to do the moving. He ended up paying hundreds of dollars extra to move all those stupid little cars. You may consider any extra cost if you have a safe, boxes, etc of coins.
Hey, one idea is to let me hold them for you. Never have to worry about them again.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The move is cross country, the collection would probably fit in 2 medium carry on bags. My son and I agreed to rent a minivan or something like that to move the pets, it probably makes sense to bring the coins with us. What a hassle!

No hassle if you just give them all to me.

If they mean anything to you, please make sure to move them yourself. You are making a good decision for you and your son to take them with you. Not only will you have your coins with you, you will have your son to spend time with.
