My son turned 11 this past summer and started to show an interest in starting a basic type set. I thought the Whitman 9046 20th Century Type Coin folder would be a nice way to go for him.

One of the things I love most about coin collecting is all the history that goes along with it. I thought this would be a great opportunity for the two of us to learn some history together. I've always been a visual person so I started thinking that a timeline might be a good way for him to see some of the relationships between various denominations.

I did some searching around the internet and didn't really find anything that offered what I wanted. So I put together an Excel spreadsheet. I thought it might be useful for others here in the forums as well.

So here it is. You may need to right click and choose save or save as

Thanks!

I wish my dad had some (any) interest in my collection.

I'm glad others are finding this useful. It does need a little tweaking though since some years the mint made no coins in the middle of a run such as in 1932 and 1933 when no Buffalo nickels were produced, etc.

Looks good!

I'm not sure how helpful this is, but I did something similar when I first started trying to organize my coins and before I got my 7070 album. I used color coding to show the temporal relationship among similar designs (like Seated Liberty coins).

The original file has some other problems. The bar for the draped bust cents is in the classic head row and there is no bar for the classic heads. Early quarters has one listing but there are three distinct types in the 1796 to 1838 period.

@barryg

That's awesome, I love that. My brain was so used to seeing a timeline horizontally that I never considered doing one vertically. Yours is a much better visualization, thanks!

I have one similar that I use in Excel. I'll try and find a blank template for it and post it here.
