Greetings from New Mexico! I use the Fisch system to verify gold coins and bullion and love it for its elegant simplicity. For the first time, however, I have a purchase that passes two of the three authenticity tests: weight is good, thickness is good. (And, the way, luster is good.) It fails the diameter test in both the slot and dish of the Fisch device. My sense is that the coin is authentic, but wonder if anyone has had, or knows of, the 1884s either being faked or being slightly oversize from the mint.

Gold coins have always been faked so it would not be surprising to see a fake 1884 S double eagle. And no they would NOT have made slightly oversized coins at the Mint. Tolerances for gold coins were extremely tight and size specifications were strictly adhered to.
