I'd use the 1909 as a temporary hole filler and impress my friends : )

I couldn't do that. If something were to happen to you and you had this fake coin in your album it would pose the threat of being sold as genuine. I would put them in a 2x2 or something and label them as what they are. Its not worth the risk to impress anyone in my opinion

Are these not considered "black cabinet" coins? If so, why not sell them as just that to a collector? John1

I personally would keep them and use them as a reference.

Hope you did not loose a bundle of bucks. Not sure of the term "black cabinet" coins but John1 is real good and has real good advice. IMO

bpoc1, Thanks a bunch . The reason I recommended to sell them to a black cabinet coin collector is that it sounds like the op doesn't collect these types of coins and they need to go to a good home. John1

I'm trying to think about a positive outcome from this. I wonder if they could become a part of a database used to help identify fakes. Maybe you could donate them to an organization that focuses on logging and categorizing fakes (how about CCF volunteers?). Or maybe an individual who is already creating such a database? I thought I saw something about someone doing this recently - I need to look further.

I've decided to send them to Steve Caruso at the Black Cabinet for attribution. Thanks for the replies.

I was about to say that you could start a collection of fakes.

Even fakes have a purpose - to teach us all what to look for. Look. I could not tell a fake S-VDB from a real one. And I have a real one, or so says ANACS. If Steve Caruso is the "go-to-guy" for all things "black", then I say "AMEN." And BrickellCat, thank you for the photos. I'll use them to teach myself.

Two pictures are worth 2000 words. Real and fake. I just HAVE to study this tomorrow. Good night, all. 'Tis 01:00 and I am off to bed.

I don't know anything about chain cents, but that 09-S VDB is pretty scary. I'm trying to convince myself that I would have caught it, but I'm not sure. Maybe with closeup shots, but I think the picture at the beginning of this thread, I would have let it go. Of course, I wouldn't buy that coin unslabbed at all..
