So I said I wasn't going to buy coins but I was in a pawn shop cause I am in Norfolk for work. I ask to look at coins and he asked what I was interested in. I said wheat cents. So he comes out with a box and pulls out several bags of cents, as well as Buffalo nickels and Canadian coins. He said "I'll sell you all this for 22 dollars. This is just junk coins with no silver in them." So I bought them just for kicks to look through while in the hotel room. I found the following in the bag of Buffalo nickels: 3x 1942 Jefferson nickels6x 1943 Jefferson nickels2x 1944 Jefferson nickels3x 1943 Jefferson nickels(That is 14 Silver War Nickels) I also found the following which was cool: 3x liberty head nickels (1910, 1908, and 1900) 1x 1909 Lincoln Cent1x 1983 Bermuda penny that (I have been watching a Bermuda cent on ebay for my world penny collection). I also have at least 30 buffalo head nickels, 50 different Lincoln cents, and a bunch of random Canadian change. I think I actually made a good catch buying all those random bags on the whim!

Way to go! I went to my LCS today without realizing they're closed on Mondays. So I tried the pawn shop across the street and asked about silver dollars (I was planning on picking up a junk Peace dollar just to add to my stack if the price was right). The girl at the counter said she doesn't have any that she can sell. I wonder what they do with them. I'm not sure if maybe they just weren't priced yet because maybe they try to sell them at premiums after doing some research or if maybe they just send them all off to be melted. I was a little surprised she didn't even give me the chance to make an offer.

Sounds like a decent purchase for $22. As someone else already asked...did any of the buffalos or lincolns have any good dates.

A lot of pawn shops hoard their junk silver. I know the owner near me just keeps it all for himself. He does well enough on his other business that he doesn't have to sell any. He could probably open his own coin store

That reminds me of one time about 10+ years ago I went into a pawn shop in Florida while I was collecting any silver halves I could get my hands on. They brought out a tray with about a dozen silver halves and some circulated silver Washington quarters on the other side (everything was piled up, nothing was in holders or flips.) I looked through the quarters quickly to see if there were any good dates and I almost choked when I found a 32-S. He sold me the lot for a bit over spot silver. I had to temper my excitement on the way home rationalizing that it must be a fake that got recycled so I took it to a coin dealer in my hometown that I knew well to see if he could figure out if it was real or not. I looked at it very carefully but could not determine because there was too much gunk around the mint mark so he suggested I take it to a show that was coming up and have an expert he recommended take a look at it. I took it to the show and the guy he sent me to cleaned it with a sonic cleaner briefly with my permission and then looked at the mint mark under his high power lens. He then told me it was real the mint mark had not been added. Best pawn shop find I ever had by far, nowadays with the Internet they don't let key dates slip through in their bullion much.

That could have been for a number of reasons, one the shop owner doesn't sell the silver they buy, another is some coin dealers, pawn shop owners, etc. will stop selling their silver if the spot price is dropping so they won't lose any money on their holdings. They will keep buying though to lower their average cost so when silver does go up again it won't have to go up as much to begin making a decent profit again. Ed ANA LM-3175

That is weird.... my local pawn shop has tons of silver dollars (some BU) for $22-$30. I snagged a 1935 BU Mercury dime, was SOOO close to FSB, got it for $5 It is MS-64 on a bad day, MS-66 on a good one :)
