Having bought exactly one gold coin I have all kinds of advice. Ha Ha

Are you buying this coin because you collect as a hobbyist or are you investing?

Can you buy the coin from someone you trust completely?

When I bought my coin, I went to a reliable shop where I had been shopping for the previous two years. The owner only showed me slabbed coins and I was glad for that because I simply have not looked at enough gold coins to be able to spot a fake. As of now, I trust PCGS and NGC to verify that the coin is genuine.

I'm sure that the gold collectors will have more advice.

Coins are not the best investments due to markups that dealers have to charge to stay in business. If you are looking for a pure investment you might want to look at bullion (rather than historical gold coins) which have smaller margins.

A British Gold Sovereign if you want a foreign coin or a U.S. $5 Liberty EF or AU could be had for around $500.

hokykid5,
If you are willing to change your goal ever so slightly I may be able to help you.

Instead of saying "100% investment" say "I want to preserve the value of $$$ paper dollars in gold."
If you can make this leap, then hear what I have to say.

I really like your idea of a 2 1/2 dollar Liberty gold piece.
But it's value will be tied to it's rarity as a numismatic item.
An eighth of an ounce of gold and much harder to find than a similar denominated Indian design.
In a slab, and only an AU example, this coin holds real numismatic value as well an intrinsic gold value.

If you are considering a five dollar piece, I would suggest staying away from the coin and to go for the mini eagle bullion coin.

The Sovereign is trusted world-wide as gold and is not a bad choice.

Please, just remember that any bullion coin will change in value day by day.
Without knowing how long that you intend to hold the gold I cannot say anything else.
Except that you must buy a coin which will make you happy for as long as you hold it.

I like Gold Quarter Eagles so you pick sounds good. You can get a lot of coin for $500 with this series (Libs).

The question is: do you want a better date or the highest grade possible or a combo? Also, do you want raw or certified? There are many lower mintage pieces available for near the price of more common dates.

Lastly, how much coin knowledge do you have? Buying certified makes sense if your background with gold pieces is limited.

I would recommend a problem-free, better date piece, certified by a leading grading company (PCGS, ANACS, or NGC) in as a high a grade as $500 allows you to acquire.

Here are some dates, with mintage figures included, that should be available certified in XF or AU condition for $500 or so.

1871 P 5,320
1880 P 2,960
1882 P 4,000
1886 P 4,000
1887 P 6,160
1890 P 8,720
1892 P 2,440
1894 P 4,000
1895 P 6,000

Any of these would represent a good value purchased in a major TPG holder in XF or AU for under $500.

Here's an example of a high-end, low mintage, certified, G$2.50 that (while the asking price is $600) would be worthwhile to purchase. Especially for $500!

For me, IMO, a significant difference in AU58 and the MS 61 it was in. FMV goes from $600 to $970.

I picked up a NGC MS61 $2.5 Indian for $313...then there were those annoying Heritage buyers fees...and shipping. After all was said and done, I still got it for quite a bit less than Numismedia FMV!

Perhaps you have seen it? https://goccf.com/t/131726

There are good deals out there you just have to flush them out.

Good luck hokykid5. I hope you find what you're looking for.

Meanwhile -- I was up late looking at quarter eagles and spent another hour looking at them today -- just browsing for now.

I suppose that would be my next bit of advice. Take your time. It's a good feeling to know for sure that you're getting what you want at a fair price.

For $500, you should be able to buy a slabbed AU $5 1/2 eagle, or come close to buying a slabbed AU $5 indian. A lot more gold for the money, and the coin detail is easier to study. Just my 2 cents.
