Building an AG-3 Carson City collection is harder than you may think. My set has some "reverse hole fillers", higher-grade coins bought for AG-3 money (such as my VG-8 Damaged 1889-CC). And then there was my 1879-CC, which many on here said could go G-4. Possible, because even PCGS might give well-circulated CC Morgans a bit of a pass on grades.

But every so often, I get lucky and score a real AG-3.

No rim denticles left on either side.

"Miracle" AG-3 reverse like my '79-CC, no denticles but all letters intact. Uh-oh, I'm smelling the "G-4" talk coming on.

But here's the kicker that keeps it out of G-4:
Rim wear touches tops of "E", "P" and bottom of "1" on obverse.

You gotta grade to the lowest face. This is AG-3.

I'm thinking it'd be a lot harder to do this with Philly issues than Carson City strikes; most of the latter actually circulated. What a wonderful idea for a collection.

Are you set on AG-3, or just lowballing? Got 1882 covered?

AG-3 is my favorite: worn, but most details are still present.

The understatement of the century! This dealer also had an 1899 Philly in VG-8, and even that was a mind-boggler.

Yep, obv AG3 reverse G4. Very nice looking coin for the grade. I can imagine finding these gals in low grade but decent looking would be harder than high grade. Good luck.
