One of my favorite coins and I have never owned one until now. I went with the VF and spent like 45 minutes examining it.
Once I removed it from the 2x2 the weight was right, 27.2 grams. I then studied the dentils which were right, there was 4 fingers holding the palm branch on the outside, the feathers flowed into the neck on the eagle on the reverse, the arrow matched up in between the 4 and the 2 on the reverse, the ribbon tips pointed downwards, the edge reeding was correct.
The shop owner kind of laughed at me as he said he had already done the same thing but let me go about examining the coin for quite awhile. I am glad he had already done it too because I trust him but at the same time I wasn't going to do my homework before purchasing a $170 coin.
I went with the VF 1877s and will post pics tomorrow as I took some on my phone but right now I only have the one cable and its at work (darn iphone 5 and changing their cables).

Congrats!. Being a member of the chopmark coin club, I was kind of hoping you would've gone w/ the chopped AU... At least you know where it is if you decide to go back

I will likely get the chop marked one later on and send it in to be certified. The chop marks aren't that great, would wish for better chop marks kind of bland chop marks.

Congratulations! This is one coin that almost scares me to death. I would love to buy this coin raw, but I feel that even in a slab, I will have to know this type better than the back of my own hand. I am impressed. Well done.

Yes it feels great finally owning one, I first started collecting more than a decade ago maybe a decade and a half and never owned one. Makes me want to get some other beauties I used to own like a 2.5 gold indian.

It was one of the coins in the 7070 album that scared the heck out of me. Before I purchased one I probably spent a month or two talking to SwamperBob and reading allot on them and looking at many many pictures of real and counterfeits so I felt a little more comfortable detecting them before I made a purchase. I could have just purchased a graded example and that wasn't out of mind but I still wanted to do this research before I bought one so I would at least have that knowledge to go on even after I had already purchased mine. It was a good feeling to finally have one though once I did purchase one.
