I have been doing a clean up and came across this one.
Am I seeing what I'm seeing or is it just a normal sixpence

Hi Trout,
Are you referring to the different looking surface ?
Looks like it might have been struck with chromed dies.

All the fields are polished but no scratches evident (It doesn't look cleaned)
looks like a proof coin but I am unaware that there ever was a 1954 proof sixpence.
I don't own any proof pre decimal silver so I have NO point of reference with this one
I had a look on "Blue sheet" but a proof 54 sixpence isn't listed there.
It's got me buggered
I have heaps of decimal proofs and this looks sooo simmilar.
Where are you Walter

1954 issues are quite commonly found like that due to many of them being struck from chrome plated dies, sixpence are most commonly seen due to the number of rolls that surfaced.

I don't believe any proofs were produced at the Melbourne mint in 1954, McDonalds lists them and so called 'proofs' have appeared at auction from time to time - PCGS and NGC even slabbed some in their early days, but every other year the Melbourne mint produced proofs, record strikes were kept at the mint (including an example set of the otherwise the exported 1953 issues) - these were catalogued in 1978 - there were no 1954s.

Thanks for that Walter
Mark told me much the same.
It is a shame these chrome dies weren't used to a larger extent, They produced a stunning coin.
I have since found another coin pretty much the same, a 1963 sixpence and I imagine this is a chrome die coin as well.
All is good , I have learnt something new and found 2 variety coins I had no idea about
