In my constant browsing around looking for potential "upgrade" and unusual coinage, I found this MSAU55 1845 Half Dime. Not a bad looking coin, but...I am leery about the PCI "container" that it resides in screaming "let me out!". Identified as a V-5, it has possibilities for being placed into a respected slab. What does the CCF think? Thanks as always! Edited by oih82w8 10/31/2012 3:42 pm

I've never seen a coin slabbed MSAU55. Does it mean MS details net AU55? That makes no sense either since it appears to be a gold label.

I can't make any sense of that either but it is a nice looking coin.

I was just doing some "research" on PCI labels and the gold ones were/are the most recent and usually overgraded. I would be buying the coin for submittal to PCGS, do you think that it would cross-over without a "details" identification? Sorry about the smaller image.
I have seen ANACS label this as (V-5, FS-302, Breen-3039. Repunched Date).
I am getting the "itchy trigger finger" on this one, but waiting on the seller to respond from up in the New England area.

I am guessing a typo that wasn't caught. She is pretty regardless. You know me, I would get her in an ANACS slab if anything. Iffin the price is right, go for it.

I've seen this before in obscure places - it's to differentiate between business/proof strikes from what I've seen. MSAU50 or PFAU50, for example.

Absolutely basebal21! It might not make it past the first stage in a PCI slab..."return to sender".
It would fall under PCGS 145430 - 1845 H10C RPD FS-301 (FS-000.65) or PCGS 38736 - 1845 H10C RPD FS-302 (FS-000.7) from what I have gathered from PCGS Coin Facts.
I will have to do some more research at the house.

Their submission categories are way to detailed since they revamped the online. 1845 Half Dime should be good enough and then they can figure out what it is. You shouldnt have to do anything but look at the coin to get find out what you need for the forum.

Quote: That makes no sense either since it appears to be a gold label. A gold label means nothing. After Brian Beardsley bought PCI in March of 2002 he did use a solid red bordered label for problem coins briefly, but then it was dropped and both problem free and problem coins were put in the gold label slabs.

Good to know, thanks Conder101, not that I ever took PCI seriously.

Quote: both problem free and problem coins were put in the gold label slabs. I haven't bought a PCI label in years. I did not know about this switch either. In the "old" days gold label meant problem free and red label was a problem coin.
