So, I thought I got a great buy on a Saint Gaudens $20 piece considering how expensive these coins can get from looking at the prices at various coin value websites. By the way, I am a total noob when it comes to coin collecting and reselling. I want to make money off of this, but it's not looking like I'm doing too well. The problem with this Saint Gaudens piece is that the date is not visible anymore at all. I've only been able to find values for XF or higher grades on this coin, no values for poor. Do any experts know the going price of a Gaudens $20 that is in basically poor condition (date is not visible anymore)? Edited by TheNinthWave

Unlike the 2 1/2 and 5 dollar denominations, the $10 and $20 saw less circulation.
Is it possible to post a picture?
Prices and grading are usually given for very fine condition and above.
Let's see if someone here can help you further.
But I suspect that your coin would be considered/valued as bullion only.

Such a coin would be worth only the value of the gold it contains. St Gaudens issues are commonly available in Mint State condition, and many (probably most) do not achieve added value in any circulated condition. So, as of right now, your coin would be worth about $1660 minus any weight loss caused by circulation. That will change in lockstep with the price of gold.
With that said, heavily-circulated St Gaudens coins are rather scarce, and might have additional value to an oddball collector.

Wow, really? I certainly wasn't expecting That much! Well, then that's pretty good news. I was thinking in the range of $35 - $50. This is very good news, thank you!

 I am not sure that we are all talking about the same coin here  Do you realize that a Saint-Gaudens $20 coin contains almost one ounce of gold? Even a very well-worn specimen would not lose more than 10-15% of its weight. If you are only thinking it is worth $35-50, then how much did you pay for it  |

For what it is worth, a dealer once told me years ago that while silver coins wear away, gold coins wear down.
Much less weight is lost.
Can anyone confirm this?

Well I made a common mistake in noobs I guess, I didn't read all the fine print, it's one of those mini reproductions. Here's the auction link where I got it. Wow that didn't even look like a Saint Gaudens that is a horrible reproduction and it even says layered in the title, I bet its worth $10 at most. Sorry you took a beating, live and learn.
