Hello everyone.

I purchased some 40% silver Kennedy half dollars (1965 - 1969) last week and now have a question.

The standard weight of 40% Kennedy half dollar is 11.5g according to the Krause Catalog, but the real weight of them are from 11.21g to 11.55g . Anyone can tell me is it within the tolerance or not? And where can I find the reference book or material about the tolerance of silver coins (US or World)?

Thanks.

I don't know if this is factual or not, but I thought I read or heard on a tour at the Philadelphia mint that +/- 2% was their standard tolerance on coin weight or else they are automatically rejected by their equipment. Typically I find when I weigh silver coins though that they are generally right on where they are supposed to be unless heavily circulated or otherwise damaged.

I don't know about the 40% coins but when I weigh mine they are also pretty much right on the weight.

There is a table in Counterfeit Detection: A Reprint From The Numismatist, Volume II that has these numbers. The tolerance is 0.4g. Keep in mind that worn coins may be at the low end or a bit outside of tolerances.

Don't forget about metal loss from wear during circulation. If your scale is accurate and can weigh down to 100th of a gram (like you stated) then I'm sure you'll find normal discrepancies.

Doubleagle is correct on the tolerance for the 40% silver halves +/- .4 grams. There is a table for the tolerances of all US coins in the Coin World Almanac and that is where I get my figures from.

I haven't checked but the tolerance tables might be found in some of the older issues of the annual mint report back when they used to have a lot more technical information in them.

I agree unless widely circulated and worn the coins usually are right on with the weight.
