I just bought this 31-S for a great price...or so I think. I know that it has been cleaned... I would say that it is a VG-8ish but I know that it being cleaned knocks off a TON of value! Can anyone give me a half way accurate value on a 31-S "cleaned" Wheatie? Here are two poor cell phone pics...

Looks higher than VG8 from what I can tell. Take it out of the holder and get better pictures. Yes, it's been harshly cleaned. Value will be greatly reduced.

Me too! How much would you give for a coin like this... I just want to see how I did on the deal...LOL! I'm not into it for much and I needed this one, and 09-S V.D.B and an 09-S for my book and I'm done!

A problem coin will always be a problem coin ... IMHO this example has very limited value to any collector.

Looks like XF detail on the obverse. Value might be VG though. Probably $60 or so.

Imma say 75 bucks. If you're like me though it will bug you until you get a new one without issues. I have a 1908-S Indian that has all the bones, everything..... but it was severely cleaned and it bothers me every time I look at it. It's a shame because the person could've gotten some serious money for her if they hadn't cleaned it.

Problem is, so far as I've experienced, some people know that they shouldn't clean coins yet will anyway. Reason being, that's how they like their coins to look, and they plan on holding on to them. Then later they decide to sell, and learn what a big mistake they made. In some cases they may pass away and their relatives make the sell. Sad thing is, really desirable coins get the same treatment as not so much desirable ones. I think it's extremely sad that your 1931S got that treatment. I own some cleaned coins that I got deals on. As far as value goes, it really only matters what you think it's value is vs what you paid. (until you go to sell it) So with that, I hope you got it for a bargain and are pleased with it. After all, it only matters that you're happy !!

It looks like it had an olive oil bath. I would soak it in acetone and see if the shiny polished look would disappear.

Here is a before/after of a 1909 I had that looks similar to yours.

I really like your example of the acetone bath. I have several penny coins I purchased at a local show and they have that glossy look. I have also tried acetone but with no luck. The coin always seems to turn a odd color. You had great results. Can you explain just a little more what type of acetone you use? Bought mine at a local hardware store and also how long you leave it in the acetone. Do you do anything else after taking it out other then letting it dry? Thanks very much for any reply.

Try the Acetone and then allow to sit on a kitchen window sill for a while.
