I recently started collecting jeffersons because I landed a score of $40 in old nickels, mostly pre60s.

What I'm curious about is, why is it that in the 40s the D mint as rare, but in the 50s, mostly it changes. The D mintage was higher than the P (unmarked from philly).

And where does san fran fit in? They made very few. And in some years they sat out like a third string quarter back! now a days, they make only proofs.

What's the story behind all this?

That was a good read! It didn't really address specifically what I was wondering, but was very informational!

I was wondering why different mints made the amounts that they did. Why did philly make more in early years, and Denver in later years? And san fran I assume is a small mint? They never made the largest amount of a coin as far as I can tell.

You should have added the CC and O Mints too. Why did they make the amounts they made, why not more, less? Why not more Mints so coins could be circulated better? Why, why, why? I suspect the govenment knows people collect coins so they figured making all sorts of odd quantities, wierd place for a Mint, would make it a much more interesting hobby. The more collectors, the more coins are needed to be produced. This is a way to preserve the jobs those Mint workers have. Other than that, I don't think anyone really, really knows.

For the early 40s its possible that WWII had something to do with it. I wasnt alive back then but the vast majority of supply lines were to support the war. It could have just been there were more blanks available to Phily and they werent going to bother to ship them around to even it out or something like that

Here is a guess: supply and demand. Some parts of the country needed more coins then other parts of the country did so when a certain bank (region) requested coins the government took notice and minted and placed into circulation the needed coinage?
