I posted the story of how I ended up with these Ikes on Friday in the Coin Roll Hunting section. I have copied the story for you below.

I was looking forward to picking up the 2 boxes of halves that I ordered on Monday. I received a call from the Assistant Manager on Tuesday telling me they forgot to order them. She was genuinely sorry for any inconvenience this caused me. I told her not to worry about it, that this was a hobby of mine and it was perfectly fine.

So I was thinking I would just pick up a couple boxes of nickels today so I would have something to do this weekend. After all, I didn't want to be bored. After I picked up 1 box of nickels from another bank, I asked my Brother if he could pick up any halves from his bank. And if they didn't have halves, I asked him to get a couple of boxes of nickels. Well he brings back 2 boxes of nickels and 1 box of halves. Now I'm set for the weekend. Or so I thought...

The Assistant Manager called me this morning asking me if I would like to have the dollar coins they had in the vault. That got my attention. When I asked her if they were large dollars, she said yes they were Eisenhower dollars. I rushed over and this is what I found. I already checked them for silver. Nothing. I'm going to go through them and hopefully complete my album. Then I will check them for errors. I don't have much experience with Eisenhower's so it will take some time. This is going to be fun.

Please-Help.-What-To-Do-With-$300-In-Ikes?

There were originally $299 and I had a 1976-D sitting on my desk so it makes an even $300 now. I don't mind saying, I'm a bit overwhelmed. I have spent the better part of the day today trying to decide how best to handle these. I have sorted them by date and mintmark.

The inventory includes:
10 1971-D
20 1972-D
8 1972-P
10 1974-D
3 1974-P
44 1976-D
69 1976-P
44 1977-D
1 1977-P
72 1978-D
19 1978-P

I'm not sure how long I can, or am willing to,keep $300 tied up. I know I'm not going to hold on to then forever. I will most likely sell them. I just don't know the best way to go about it? Do I attempt to find Die Varieties first and sell them individually or sell them all as a lot? I have been on The Ike Group website most of the morning. It has left me a little confused.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

You could always spend them if you decide its not worth the time and effort.

For ebay you could put together date sets and sell them in lots that way. Once you cant make date sets anymore you could try pairing them by year if possible or just doing a roll of 20 with the possible dates and mm that could be included. Selling each one individually will take a lot of time and effort and after fees wont bring much extra at all.

If you find any unusual or hard to find ones id sell those individually depending what the going rate is, but if its only 2 or 3 dollars Id do it in lots

Check for the 1972-P TYPE II...an easy spot...
Then, look for PEGLEGS, Talon Heads, and clashed IKES...all have minor to moderate premiums...
With a loupe, look for any Double Dies(BOTH sides...), and, repunched mintmarks on all Denver Coinage...
If you are good spotting Die States, check for Early Die State Coins, as they generally will show sharpest details, and, usually highest grade, and, pretty hard to find, as the dies wore so fast.
Last, Check your 1971-D for the RDV-OO6, FEV...the islands face 4 in a line, and, the crater above L in DOLLAR has flow lines almost to top of L.
Good luck hunting!

Thanks for the response. Spending the ones I don't sell sounds like a good idea. It would be good to just see the look on people's faces.

ilikeikes, I have been looking for any errors already. I am trying to find good photos of errors for comparison.

I had picked up 500 Ikes from another member IIRC, and I spent most of them face value at a local coin shop for Morgan dollars and Peace dollars for my collection.

There are a couple sites to help you out. Sort out the 76s into their types as well.

Murphy, if you like this offer we can move to the buy/sell section (I see jbuck coming with his "YOU THERE!! TO BUY/SELL/TRADE WITH YOU!!" hammer out):

I will purchase a set of six from you, one per year regardless of mm, for double face. I'm not sure what shipping will be exactly (I just sent 27 ATB all in flips and paid $7 and change, so I imagine somewhere in a similar range), but it should be relatively low and I will cover this also.

It is a bit surprising. :)

If you end up opening it up to CCF members, I'll take a bunch off your hands as I'm working on a circulated album.

OO sounds like there might be a bit of competition for them. Make a set up for the CCF members. Just one set though :) keep the competition up
