I was wondering if anyone else had tried this? I have bought about a dozen and found very mixed results. Everything from "great" to "are you kidding me"
I talked to one of the sellers and found out some interesting info I thought I would share. It turns out there are a couple of companies out there who purchase wheat pennies in bulk. Then wrap them with a machine, carefully placing "desirable" coins on each end, then filling the rest of the roll with various wheats.
Can anyone out there verify this practice? It makes some sense in that the "roll" is technically unsearched. But if the people wrapping them have already picked all the best coins out, then this is not a good purchase.
Just wanted some feed back.

I have never bought them off ebay, but from the stories I have heard about them I stay clear. As for the practice of putting desirable coins on the ends, I would assume most of the sellers who sell these rolls do that. It doesn't make sense to not search a roll and then sell it on ebay, potentially selling a key date for $9.99.

I sell bulk wheats on ebay all the time, however I don't use the practice of seeding rolls with ridiculous merc dimes, flying eagle, or civil war tokens. Those are the rolls you have to stay away from. And yes, there are companies and dealers that go out of their way to put these so-called "unsearched" rolls together. They're making money for sure.

Ok, after reading my post again I think I should be more clear about what I meant. The penny rolls that have the 'unsearched' tag in the name with the silver dimes, IHs, or other showing on the ends are the ones I would stay away from. The regular rolls that don't make the 'unsearched' claim or that don't have the misplaced coins are the ones that I wouldn't worry so much about. Not saying they are safe either, but they sure seem more believable than the ones making the above claims. If that makes sense?

I've never bought any 'unserached' rolls but the story you posted is pretty much what I would expect. And it is that claim that the rolls are 'unsearched' that has kept me from doing so because I cannot believe that the rolls are truly unsearched and why would I do business with someone whose intention is to deceive?
I have been considering buying rolls of wheats because I think it would be fun to have more than the 10 wheaties I have now. I found a dealer that sells them by the roll. They are sorted by decades and grades. For example, I could buy a roll of wheaties from the 30's that are all approximately 'very good' for a certain price.
I figure the worst that could happen is a coin from the wrong decade could end up in a roll by mistake or I might dispute the approximate grade. That's not too bad and it's better than buying 20 rolls only to find out they are all from the same decade.

Buddy, an easy way to accumulate rolls of wheats is through metal detecting. I've piled up about 30 rolls worth in about 3 years time, many in great shape.

I don't believe un-searched rolls exist so I don't buy em and especially paying a premium for em on E-bay.

fistfulladirt I would love to go metal detecting. It is illegal in Illinois.
However, there are MD clubs and they sell the equipment so there's a loophole I don't know about.

I've heard it said before, I don't think their is such a thing as an unsearched roll. In searching bank rolls, I can determine how much silver is in a roll by weighing the roll. I think all roll sales on ebay are marketed so carefully so you can't really prove they are scamming you. I get my "unsearched" rolls from the bank for face value.

well said everything I can tell you if a roll definatly has no silver in it without opening wich is probably what they are doing but people still buy them.

I wouldnt buy an "unsearched" roll on ebay, imo it's a waste of money that could be used to buy the exact coin you want, but I admot some of those rolls are tempting but probably too good to be true.

Buddy, where did you hear it is illegal in Illinois? Maybe it is illegal on state property, but I would think that it is legal in other public areas unless the town or county has a law against it. Private property should also still be legal.

Sorry -- missed your reply -- apparently for a whole week.
Anyway, I have been digging up stuff in my own yard for twenty years. I got interested in metal detecting and looked online to see what was allowed and where I could go do it. And I saw some law that said it was illegal except on private property -- so I could MD all over my itty-bitty yard.
What I read seemed strange to me so I checked with my sister, the judge, and she said it was in fact illegal.
I've never seen anybody doing it here -- ever.
It's too bad. But like I wrote before, there are MD clubs in IL (none near me) so they must go somewhere. I suppose that they get permission to go searching on farm fields during the non-growing season.
