When the light is shone from the right (at an angle), it seems like real eyes appear... it increased my level of appreciation massively

Is that how they all are or did someone drill them a little?

No tampering involved (in either photos / videos / coins)... it's just the way the light is reflected, creating this unbelievable effect. I used a 40w desk lamp from the right side, spotting on them (that's why the effect is reduced to the furthest left).

(note to mods: I accidentally put this thread in the classic category, sorry)

Indeed it is very cool... but its not really visible with the naked eye... when the angle is right, our naked eye will only detect a reflection from the eye area of the coin. Then its time for the camera to capture it.

I discovered it by accident, when trying to photograph a set of half dollars before uploading it. When reviewing the photos at 25% zoom, I saw something peculiar, I zoomed in and then ...I had goosebumps. It was so real-like that I was stunned and mystified. It was like the eye had the "glass" effect which is when you look the outer layer of a cat's eyes from a certain angle that you can see the glassy curve... but what totally blew me away was that after reviewing 3-4 photos (all having the exact same thing) then I stumbled upon the fifth of the set which had the "red eyes" effect, just like when you take a picture of human eyes. But instead of red glow, it was green glow. I was like "W T F just happened? Eye camera-sparkle from eyes portrayed in a coin - eyes that shouldn't even be there in the first place? How is that even possible?"...

2 photos (from when I discovered it):

...and that's when I saw the "Red-eyes" camera shot (which was actually green eyes-sparkle in the coin)

they are all this way. I remember noticing this on the Kennedy half when I was a kid. You can even see this feature on well worn examples.

Thanks for the move

If anyone is in the mood to replicate the effect and upload some pics of better-looking coins than mine -which are far from perfect- the light should be positioned somewhat like this:
