The reason why is simple...the wildcard symbol makes too much sense. ebay has it in their official policy to make changes as useless and counter-productive as possible, all while never addressing the real problems with scams, shill bidding, and buyer favoritism.

I use the asterisk with every search I do on ebay and this is definitely going to take some getting used to as I also use it on Google and every other place I do a search on that I want to have a bigger range or do not know the exact phrase or spelling I am searching for. I do not like this new policy at all and really have no idea why they would make this change

What exactly does that do during a search, never used that before

Not sure about specifically ebay, but on other searches for "basebal21" you might input basebal* and get back basebal21, baseball, baseballs, or anything that starts with the letters "basebal..."

i wonder how that will affect partial words, ie will COIN still give back COIN and COINS.
its going to make searching for date ranges painful (if I want 1940-49 I use 194*, can I plug in 194 and still get a hit from the partial?)
going to go test and answer my own questions!

No, WCW, if you put in 194 you will get a couple finds with exactly 194 in it plus a slew of other random finds from every catagory on ebay. This change makes my searches a lot tougher too. My opinion is it really stinks. They must be following the rule: If it is not broken.... fix it until it is!

It's getting worse.Since ebay only allows 100 characters in a search,my 12 searches will expand to at least 30 by the time I'm done editing all of them.Without the * there is no practical way to account for spelling errors in listings. Now this morning the "add to watch list" feature is gone from the search results, have to open each item to add it.Why are they doing this?

From a buyers point of view, of course, it might mean more mis spellled bargins can be found by looking hard enough.

I was thinking that too Bacchus2. Might take a lot of time but we can probably find more bargains now. So if you are selling, make sure your listing is easily searchable.
