Question 1991 Quarter - Coin Community Forum

spring423 Valued Member United States 240 Posts	Posted 11/06/2012 11:28 am Hi Folks Have a question in regards to this 1991 quarter. When I come across something I like to put it in a 2x2 and label it for future reference. When checking my pocket change I came across this quarter. My question is that on the left wing below the word united there is a raised line. Would this be considered a Cud or die break. Or would it just be where the quarter was not worn down like the rest of the quarter. Thanks for any info. Report this Post to the Staff

Although chips and Cuds are both forms of a die break, I was often told in this forum that Cuds are usually in reference to breaks on the edge of the coin. Report this Post to the Staff

biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 11/06/2012 12:10 pm The leading edges of the eagle's wings are points of inherent weakness in the die design, you will repeatedly see die cracks in that location. A Cud is a specific type of die break that affects the the face and shank of a die, always emanating inward from the rim. Report this Post to the Staff

I wouldn't call it a Die Break because when the die breaks a piece falls off of the die. Then you have a Cud. Cuds are very noticeable.
