It is normally $500 for a box of halves, as Bruce has mentioned. Normally I get a strange look, or they tell me they will keep an eye out for me.

I guess there really is no lose because I'd just cash it in at a different bank in a day or 2 and I'd have a few silvers or errors maybe. Thanks for the help guys

the small box I got from my bank was $100, 10 rolls of halves. 8 of them were old wrapping, two were new from the FED. When you guys order these huge amounts from your banks, do you get all circulated coins or are some of the rolls uncirculated? I had two uncirculated in mine which are no help if looking for silver. If only they were 1964 uncirculcated? :(

I recently asked my bank to order me a $1000 box of half dollars. The woman said she could order then if I would purchase them all. But she asked, and kind of offended me, "What do you need them for? A business?" I just felt like saying, "I need them to look at while I chuck corn on my porch!" What gives them the right to ask me what I need them for? I want, some halfs, your my bank, you server me, I give you money, so just give me the half dollars! It's a dog eat dog world I tell yeah.

I really don't think she was trying to be rude. She most likely was just trying to make conversation and build the customer relationships that all our managers get on us to do. She could of asked a little bit better, but I really don't think she was meaning to offend you by it. Also it is really rare when people do ask us to order large amounts of coins so for the tellers who aren't collectors tend to not understand why people order so many coins at one time. When ever people come in and ask for things like that for us to order I always ask if they collect, but thats more cause its fun to find other collectors in the area and it gives us something to talk about when ever they come into the bank.

I have checking accounts at two banks. I opened an account at a third bank because they have a coin machine that they do not charge for, and you don't have to reroll anything. They are in grocery stores and open on Saturday and Sunday!

I'm no expert on banks, but this is what I've found out:

The first time you order boxes of halves from a bank, the teller will probably think that they can't order them, they don't know how, or they think that "they don't even make those anymore". There is a 'head teller' or something like that who is responsible for ordering money from the armored car company. Just be persistant and have the person you are speaking with ask the head teller. If that person doesn't know, then ask to speak with the branch manager. I've found that most of the time they are not being rude, they just honestly don't know they can order a box of halves. Maybe there are banks that can't order coins from their armored car service, but all of mine can.

The halves come from an armored car company. One box is $500. I have been told by one bank that they would order them, but I'd have to take the whole box. My two main banks have different companies. One comes in a cube that is 5x5 rolls, two rolls high. (Actually the box that is a cube is a very nice box to use for storage for coin tubes, unused 2x2's, and Legos.) The other comes in a long box that is 5 x 10 rolls, only 1 roll high.

For a long time, I would order from both banks. Before I returned the halves to the third bank, I marked on every one (yes-on each coin) with a permanent black magic marker. (Oh, yea, I'm neurotic). After a while, the boxes that I got in from one bank started to have a lot of my marked coins in them. I assume that my return bank sends the halves to the same armored car company that one bank gets them from. Recently I got a box from them for the heck of it and about 1/3 of the coins were ones I've already gone through. Now I rarely order from that bank.

I get paid once a month. On the Monday before payday, I call my bank and order three boxes of halves. By now, they don't question or hesitate, they know me. I pick them up on Friday, go through them Friday night. Take them back to the return bank on Saturday or Sunday. By Monday I've got all the money back in the bank (except for any keepers) and I can pay my bills monday night.

If anybody asks me what I want them for, I either tell them I'm looking for silver, they laugh because they don't believe me. or I just tell them I spend them. Why else would anyone want a bunch of money?

I wanted to make sure I wasn't looking through the same box of halves over and over again. As it turned out, I was. I don't do it anymore now that I know how the coins are circulating through my banks.

I spoke with my credit union manager last week. I basically told her that I collect coins and wanted to start working on a set of half dollars. I asked her if she could order me a box. She stated that she didnt think they could do that, however later that day when she put in the order, she said they did not say she could not order a box. SO, it is due in tuesday. I guess I will see how it goes, and of course I will let you all know what happens.

The part of coin collecting that I absolutely hate is going into the banks and working with tellers and bank employees. I am already sick of going into banks looking for Philadelphia Mint Washington dollars.

I received my box of half dollars from the bank earlier this week. Overall it was fun to do, however I dont know if I will do it again. This may be a once a year occasion for me.

A box is 1000 coins, which is 500 bucks, of course. I received all Kennedy pieces, which is about what I expected. I keep reading stories of people finding Franklins, and even Walkers, I was not expecting this at all, and good thing because I would have been dissapointed.

Overall I received coins from 1971 to 2001 (excluding 1975 and 1986). Of course these two years they were not released for circulation, however I believe some were in 1986, just a much lower number. I received most coins from 1971, 1972, 1974, and 1976.

I was most dissapointed with the condition of the coins. I was expecting to find a lot of good condition coins, boy was I wrong. I could not believe how scratched to hell these coins were. After going through 1000 of these babies, I have a new respect for a highly graded Kennedy half dollar. What is also weird, the obverse of these coins are mostly heavily damaged, the reverse is usually in a general good condition.

I still need to seperate by mint, however I will at least be able to complete (or 90% complete) a Kennedy collection from 1971-2001. Because I am just starting to dig into seriously collecting coins, this is an easy set that should be on everyones resume. Of course as I said, I have lots of room to improve my set because there are not many pieces that are in good condition. This really had me mad by the end of the rolls because they are not heavily circulated, how can they be so tore up.

Oh well, off to the bank to retun most of them next week.
