I keep reading posts where collectors state they go to their bank and order a box of coins, such as 1000 half dollars, and proceed to find silver and franklin coins. I was wondering how this works. If the bank orders a box of half dollars, why do they not receive a box of new half dollars from the mint? Also, how do you ask your bank to order a box of half dollars? Every time I ask a bank if they have any half dollars on hand, (or new president dollars for that matter) I tend to get a 'put out' attitude.
Basically I would like to start my collection of half dollars and am looking for the best way to do this. I only have about 5 different dates right now and am looking to jumpstart my collection.

From what I understand, You can ask a bank to order you coins and they should be new coins. As for the older coins, people just go in the bank and say "I would like 5 rolls of Half dollars" and the bank teller will either say they don't have any or they will give them to you. I also understand, it is not wise to return the searched coins to the same bank for exchange of new coins to search. I know what you mean about people getting attitudes. I have asked for rolls of half dollars and they just look at me like some sort of nut case...
Hope that helps, Tim

I would think this would be a good project for a coin club to purchase rolls of coins from bank and then after search at club meeting offer the sorted coins to the club members at a reasonable price.
Any comments on this?

From what I have read (it is actually on another forum) people are having their bank order a box of coins. This would not be half dollar rolls just sitting in their vault.

the coins that we order at the bank are not always new. sometimes we get new rolls in the boxes, but unless its during a time that they allow us to order the rolls from the mint we cant get them. We get our money from the armored car service and most of the coins we get they roll and put in a box from their company. If you want your bank to order you a box of coins just either ask the teller supervisor or ask the manager if they can order you a box of them. Most banks dont have rolls and rolls of half dollars but if you just ask we can always order a box. generally as long as we know you will come and buy the whole box the banks will order the coins for you.

AHHH, yes that is a subject that bank personal really get ticked off about. People that want large amounts of coins to look through and then return what they don't want. The banks have to take these and run them though counters and this takes time from tellers that could or should be waiting on normal people. When this becomes repititious, many banks will tell your where to go and it's not a nice place. What I have been doing for many, many years is open up a savings account at several different banks. Get your coins from one of them and always return them to a different one. Always deposit the entire amount in your account. No bank will evern tell you not to make a deposit in your account regardless of what it is composed of. However, the best method of acquiring coins from a bank is not these methods. Nowadays with coins being so hot many people have contacts in banks that are looking out for things for them. Many tellers will put anything aside that looks out of the ordinary for a son, daughter, husband, wife, neighbor, nephew, etc. Large amounts of coins broght in and a certain somebody is notified. The best thing to do now is to date a bank teller, marry a bank teller or force a family member to get a job in a bank.

yeah that is true we dont like to get the coins back. Thats the reason we generally dont keep many coins in our vaults. We have a limit to how much money we can have in our vault at one time and all those coins can really add up and doesn't leave as much room for the paper money. The other thing is that if you do return the coins you need to find out if they accept rolled coin or if they want them loose and if they have a coin sorter. Even when I get boxes of coins they tell me not to bring them back, which I do work there so course they can joke around and tell me that, but yeah you do have a point having someone close to you work in a bank is a great thing. Its the reason I got a job at a bank, lol I actually told them that too when I had my interview and they still hired me!
I do understand things totally different now though, all the things I hated about banks before I now understand why the banks do the things that they do.

In my opinion, its a banks job to take your deposits, even if its a box of rolled coins. It's just too bad if its too much hassle for them. If your only with one bank, you gotta turn in your rolls somewhere. Sorry if I sound cranky. I just have a strong opinion on this.

I did ask for $100 in halves at my bank and they said that they did not have them. They did tell me they could order some for me. One of them called their drive thru bank a few blocks away and they had what I requested so I went there and picked them up. I really do need to go back in there and order a box. Any of the rolls I get from a bank will not be returned there. I spend them and collect them.

Sounds as though a lot of bankers could use a little brush up on customer service. The banks are not just there to service the business customers, they are also there in my opinion to service the customer. A lot of competition for the consumer accounts could be enhanced by providing the extra service for the few who want rolled coins.

A box is $500.00 however there is no guarantee you will find silver in that box. I search rolls and a box all the time some times I get lucky but most of time there is absolutely nothing.
