what are they worth?
I have seen a local BM which has two liberty dollars or are they caled capped bust dollars for sale. they are definatly fake. I had a magnet in my pocket when I was looking at them. I couldnt even get the magnet off.
He told me he would sell them for 15 each.Is this a decent price for fake coins?
does anyone else have any experience buying fake coins?

Why bother? $15 would buy you 1/2 ounce of real silver.

There are several here on the forum that collect fakes/counterfeit coins. I'm sure they'll find their way to this link...

To high for a fake. Problem is with fakes is there are possibly many people out there with them and will never know unless they try to sell. Even then, may never know.

I am with rgathright, what's the point unless you are a fake collector, in which case I can't see why you'd be asking if it was a good deal. Take that money and buy a nice Morgan!

Here is my opinion on fake coins:
If you have one fake in your collection it kind of drags down the rest of the other real coins in your collection. It's like me having a CZ diamond in a case with other real diamonds. My customer is going to think if this one is a fake diamond maybe the others are fake too.
If I was going to collect fakes, I would want period made fakes, not Chinese junk. Like the hand drawn bank notes. Yes, fake but real works of art.
Just my opinion.

I have a binder full of Trades, never spending more than $4. Some of the chop-marks are actually pretty nice.

I pick up fake coins from $1.00 to $5.00.
I am getting them put in a seperate binder well marked as fake coins.
I only want them to learn more about fake coins. I want to know how they look, how they feel and any markers to watch out for.

GR58 -- You should start up a new thread. Call it Counterfeits 101 or Intro to Counterfeits or something. Post detailed pictures of both sides of each piece from your collection of fakes along with detailed narrative descriptions of each and suggestions on distinguishing characteristics and what the rest of us should be looking out for. Encourage everybody else to pitch in so we could get an online reference library going.

Quote: GR58 -- You should start up a new thread. Call it Counterfeits 101 or Intro to Counterfeits or something. It does sound like a good idea. I am thinking CCF might have a plan to start a section for fake coins. As for me, I am in the starting phase for my project. I hope in the future I will be able to put together a large enough group of coins and documentation to be helpful in identifying fake coins better. If CCF does start a section I would be glad to contribute. I also feel there are some expert members here on CCF that have detailed knowledge and examples, that I am sure would be helpful. We can all hope that soon, something can come together.

just imho- I have a special album for fake coins, their good fakes too. I got each of them at genuine value, of course believing they were genuine.. in short, its my album of lessons on how to spot a fake and how fakes can be passed off as genuines. But I don't buy coins knowing they are fakes, I buy genuines- that may turn out to be fakes . Luckily this year not a single one managed to slip in . it's a good year
