So, I finally have my thumb-cut pages for my new homemade album on their way from Whitman! (Thanks to BadThad for the information on how to start one and to everyone who directed me to him, also!) I plan to break my collection into three parts: --cents album: ?-1982 (with ? being an ever-backward-sliding date--probably to the start of IHC) --nickels album: ?-1960 (I think I may do buffs, then stop there until the day I can afford prettier V nickels . . . don't like 'em in low grades) --surplus cents and other random magpie stuff, which I can sort at least a little of into my nice shiny red box Here is my question: because the cent collection is going to end up being huge--well over 500 coins, if I did my math right--I want to label the thumb-cuts. I'm moving in with my sister and my nieces, and while Maya is the original "good girl" and my coins are protected in flips, I'm not discounting the possibility of a "hey, Amy!! My Aunt Nina has a ~*~*~treasure~*~*~ come and see!" mishap (the best of good intentions, etc.--if Maya gets interested in my old bits of metal, all well and good and I do not mind having to put them back in the right order). How can I label the thumb-cuts so I can start with where I am right now (this is especially problematic in my cents, where I have a 20-year gap between the 1860s and the 1880s with nothing in it), then remove labels to reorganize later, without introducing non-inert chemicals and such into my album? I know rubbing alcohol easily removes Sharpie, but I don't know that I feel good about writing all over the slots even with a layer of Mylar in between. . . . . oh, I also have two hundred more flips coming (quarter size for my nickels and cents, cent-size for my dimes and foreigns--I hate not having a little space around the coin because I'm always afraid the cardboard will ding the coin). AND THIS ALL STARTED AS A TEENSY PILE OF POCKET CHANGE.

Are you talking about the 20 slot coin pages for 2x2s ? I got a bunch from BCW with the thumb cut outs at the bottom of each slot but they contain PVC so I went with another of their 20 slot pages that didn't have it. Now I need to sell a bunch of BCW pages....cheep.

I made a chart on plain paper for what was what. The chart goes on the left and the coins go on the right so when you look at it, -- well, it's like those old-fashioned boxes of candy where they tell you what' what on a chart inside the lid.
I figured that way I could change the chart if I decided to rearrange my collection.
It's still sort of a mess because I'm still in the 'rough draft' phase but I hope to make a nice version someday.

Raymo, I think mine are 25 slots--I got 'em from Whitman. Got them in the mail today and they're 20 slots also. But yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
Buddy: I don't have a printer, so unless I want to do everything out by hand, that's not really an option. But it's a cool idea!

label your cards by number starting in 1982 and work your way up in number as you go back in years. 1982; 1 s, 1d, 1p 1981 2s, 2d, 2p and so on. good luck thats the only way I can think of labeling the flips

Silvercoin, it's not the flips that need labeled--I write the year and mm on every flip as I flip 'em. I want to label the actual thumb-cuts.

It is an electronic label maker. Available at Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, etc.

Aha! I may look into that. I thought of Dymotape, but my experience with it from work is that the label would be too wide and cover part of the coin. I'm ordering ten more sheets this weekend and then should be able to have everything put together properly to see what I'm missing . . . with or without labels, can't wait to show you all

Using those type pages and 2x2's is a great idea. Also, gives you the opertunaty to place a piece of paper with info next to the coins if so desired. Also, flexible for moving coins without touching them. Downside is how much room they take up. 20 coins per page and with possibly many hundreds or even thousands of coins, Might end up with an enormous Album. And if you check out places like Office Max, Office Depot, etc for those blank covers and those expandable posts, you could end up with an Album a few feet thick. I've made some of my own Albums using Whitman blank covers and many blank pages. Also, those press on letters and numbers they sell. Fun to invent your own.
