Why do you need something so powerful? You have to be careful not to over-analyze.

As I recall, we used to have "Radio Shack" in Oz, but it got swallowed up by Tandy, which was subsumed by Dick Smith; and which is now going through major changes ...
if any Australians on CCF find a distributor &/or retailer of this item , please let the rest of us know.

Just the 'bees knees' to take to a coin show, or for just examining your coins away from a computer screen. I will be on the lookout for one of these at a Jaycar distributor in Australia.
Peter: I guess that for Aussies, that Jaycar would be the place to head for.
I guess that it is made in China - just the thing for identifying Chinese fakes!

BadThad, I have ran across coins at various places that were marked as certain varieties or errors. I couldn't quite make out for sure if it was indeed. I use a 16X loupe and now in those circumstances I can be positive. I just hate buying something and getting home and it not being what I thought or what it's marked. just extra precaution. Maybe overkill? But, I know I'll use it.

I bought one of these sometime ago. They do work pretty well.

I share a laptop with my girlfriend. We both work day shift. Now she can have her computer time without me bugging her to hurry up. I can enjoy hours (if I choose) with this scope. I see potential with this. I realize my 16X is (for the most part) plenty for examining coins before I buy, but it's there if I need it now. I know of at least two times that I could have used it though. Someone who deals with coins on a daily basis would get more use out of it I would think. Then again, they have a better eye for those details I guess. Anyhoo, just thought I'd share a find.

Due to circumstances beyond my control and despite my aversion to malls, I recently found myself at the largest mall in my area. In an effort to keep the trip from being totally repulsive, I stopped in at the Radio Shack there and bought one of these little $12 wonders.
After trying it out, I'll admit I'm impressed beyond belief. They didn't print that "100X --> 80X" on the side of this piece for nothing. This little cheapie lets you examine a coin at a threshold of fine detail that I'll never really need. The built-in LED makes the inferior house lighting that characterizes most coin show venues immaterial.
If you ever buy an unslabbed coin that costs thousands of dollars, this little microscope should definitely be one of the several tools you use to examine that coin.
Even if you don't buy at that level but still put serious $$ into pricey coin purchases, buying one of these could very possibly be the best and most important $12 you'll ever spend.

Fat Freddy, Did I help with your decision to buy? I think that's great if I did. I know I was impressed with it too. Either way, I'm glad you liked it when you got it home. I just hope it's a quality made item. Seems to be, but time will tell.
