Good afternoon folks, I was sorting through my bequethed coin collection, and after about a week or so of research I think I have come up with a couple of rarities, or perhaps of some value. I wondered if there were any kind folks who might be able to offer me their opinion? I have quite a few, so might I take the liberty of posting them up? Ill start with the first that might be an error; Its a 1942 South Africa one penny, but the dot at the date is missing-I have loads of these but all have dots either side.

Here is the second; I read that this was a rare year and the coin looks in pretty good condition. A good example?

The '3' in 1843 appears to be a little funky! Is this some sort of error?

First to the forum. The 1942 South Africa penny is a variety with no star after date. In the Krause Catalog in fine condition it is $3. The coin with both stars (before and after date) in fine condition lists for $.50. The 1843 Half Farthing is not an error. The 3 looks like that in the die. Type 1843 Half Farthing in ebay, there are quite a few examples. Your coin also appears to have been cleaned. The 1915-H Florin looks nice. I would post it in the Australia grading forum on here and see if some of our Aussie friends could help you out.

thank you very much for that. Does that mean that all the 1942 SouthAfrica Pennies I have with dots either side are rare? Or did they produce 2 different designs in the same year? I've attached a picture(not mine, saved me resizing!) of the 'two dots' coin below. I just cannot find an image of a coin with the dot AFTER the date, missing. I didn't know the farthing had been cleaned, it certainly wasn't by me so it would have been 30 years ago plus, shame that! Nice to know about the number though, thanks. My next query is this coin, I cannot find an example of the edge detail where it looks like this

I think that's an 1866 Vatican/Papal States one lira silver coin. It's a nice one too. Google it and you'll see a full spectrum of prices for it.

Thank you, sir, I really will have to keep these good-they have just all been lying together in a box for years. I like your avatar, I came across one of them in my collection as it happens!

Hello, paul, welcome to the forum! It's nice to see you're having fun with your new collection.
Your Arabic coins are mostly from Egypt:
Top: Egypt (kingdom)5 millemes dated AH 1360 / AD 1941, featuring king Farouk, Next: Egypt (Ottoman Empire) 1 qirsh dated AH 1293 (accession date of sultan Abdul Hamid II), regnal year 29 ( = AD 1904), Next: a trinket made of king Farouk's, I believe, 1/2 or 1 milleme (because it is bronze looking), Next: Egypt (Ottoman Empire) 2/10 qirsh dated AH 1293/29 ( = AD 1904), Next: Egypt (Ottoman Empire) 5/10 qirsh dated AH 1293/29 ( = AD 1904), Last: Saudi Arabia 1/4 riyal dated AH 1354 ( = AD 1935). That one is 91.7% silver.

Quote: Does that mean that all the 1942 SouthAfrica Pennies I have with dots either side are rare? No, it is the more common variety. That is why in fine condition it lists for 50 cents. Between both coins for 1942 there were 14,428,000 minted. That's quite a lot. So neither of them would be considered rare. Both are pretty common.

Thank you both for such a detailed reply, I have looked up those Egyptian ones and read a little about them, very interesting. It's good to know what they are! I don't think they are valuable, though, but I can catalogue them away for another 30 years! I'm working my way through literally hundreds!
