The reverse seems to he more wear than the obverse. I would grade the reverse aVF. I think the obverse is VF-gVF although there seems to be quite a few dings. Overall I think VF would be fair.
I wouldnt put it in anything with PVC. I think a 2x2 or saflip would do the trick as far as storage goes.

Thank you kind sir, Not being a professional, I didnt know about the PVC, its an old memory card case I put it in this week when I was sorting through them!. I take it the PVC degrades the coin? Interesting, thanks

Over time PVC leaches green goo which sticks to the coin and can cause ugly staining.

Ah I see. I have looked up the price of these coins, there seems to be a vast difference between one and another. What would you suggest the value of my one was, roughly speaking?
I have a few other silver Australian coins, might you be able to give me a rough appraisal on them as well?!
I certainly wasn't considering selling them, they have been lying together in a box for over 30 years and I was going to put a wee display together, but if they might fund me and the missus a caribbean holiday I might reconsider!!

Paulg I agree with enwarb VF, with some nice toning ( Shame about the rub on the high areas on the reverse) Listed on "Blue Sheet" at $220 for a VF coin. Try not to be tempted to clean any of your coins, it will devalue them in an instant. By all means post pics of your other coins, WE all love to see images of coins

I agree $200 is around the mark for your coin. The others you have arent worth nearly as much but are still nice! I would suggest the silver coins are worth about silver value with the possible exception of the 42 florin and 41 shilling. We would need to see photos of the head side (obverse in coin language) to determine that. The penny is probably worth about $1-5. Although it seems to be around VF and has a decent book value in reality 1924 pennies are very common in grades even as high as EF.

I just use my digital camera, 16MP Nikon coolpix s6100, nothing special. Set at; Macro mode, with flash, then just crop the image around the coin. Then photoshop to rescale to 400px. I hold the camera above them about 12"

and while I'm here, can anyone offer any advice on a grading/value for the other coins perhaps? I am now in the process of cataloguing them all in an excel spreadsheet-not fun, I'm at #152! The things I do to stay organised!

...and here is a slightly better photo of my florin; still gutted about the condition though! Are y'all sure its only a VF! If anyone wants an idea of what was going through my wee head when I came across it,have a laugh at this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSg-yZ4MU3U

Yeah, unfortunately it's only VF at best. The kangaroo and emu need more detail for higher grades. In better examples the emu's feathers are visible as are both animals faces. That said, it's not a high mintage coin and I don't think many would be in such good condition. From a quick look at the reverses you posted (starting from the 1942 florin) I'd say VF or better, F, EF or better, F, VF and VF.
