Sorry.... Nothing to contribute, regarding the counterstamped coin. Unless simple initials are set in relief, akin to a known silversmith's hallmark, they're virtually impossible to attribute. Fun items to own, nevertheless.
Excessively worn = honorable service in commerce but without a place in my collection. Deliberately damaged = downright depressing; a dis-service to any coin. I have worse examples than these... just waiting for the right opportunity to give them a more appreciative home.
Note the curvature of an 8, adjacent to the top right of the first 4 in 1844. It looks in your pic as if there's something there. I just couldn't discern if it might be that variety, but it appears to be that something's there, in that spot. Perhaps it is PMD?
..how 'bout that. The overdate features are easy to see on that coin. Thanks for the link. Mine definitely does not have the curve, or the two prongs on the second 4. Also I am not set up for photos of much better quality than the ones I posted.
