Ok, I've been an ebay noob buyer and bought on impulse without much knowledge of this particular coin and with not a great picture either which *should* have been a big no-no.

This apparently comes from someone selling on behalf of an elderly gentleman and the seller did indeed have some older uk coins. I've not yet parted with my cash, is there anything you can see from this pathetically small picture which doesn't seem legit?

I don't see anything that jumps out as fake. If they were claiming it was a 1885 or 1886, then I would run screaming from those pictures. The stars appear to be well struck so I am crossing my fingers for you.

Do you know if the date is 1884 or 1894? I can't quite make out the third digit.

I already bought it, I don't think they really knew what they were selling as the description was messed up but they were reasonable in describing their other coins as worn etc. I'm hoping it grades at least vf or I will have overpaid though!

You are ok with 1884, IMHO. No reason to fake that date.

Hello,

Yes, I agree that these photos are difficult to use in deciphering any of the details that could help in fully addressing your concerns.

The dark color does not concern me, however, since I have encountered several of these V nickels having similar toning.

Try to upload some additional close-up photos that would better assist the CCF to visualize exactly what you have here.

In the event your camera setup lacks the capability of drilling down further producing greater magnification, try reviewing the options presented in the following CCF thread related to USB photographing of coins, an effective and economical alternative:

I don't have the coin in hand yet, these were photos that were on the listing. As I said I took a bit of a noobs chance really. I'll certainly update the pictures on this thread when the coin arrives.

I think you're probably ok. The coin looks to be XF.

Regarding the color, it does concern me a bit.

If the picture is accurate then it looks exactly like a nickel that has had an old cleaning and has been retoned. Often, the retoning becomes darker and more grey than most natural toning on this particular series.

Unfortunately Hesgut I think you're probably right now I have the coin in person, however I have a loupe and can't see classic tell tale sign of scratches on the surface.

It would be annoying because the coin actually has some lovely detail.

Seeing the coin better, I think it's at least an EF-45 and some might call it an AU-50.

I do not believe those are natural surfaces. It hasn't been whizzed or anything aggressive like that, but it has been cleaned. Probably a very long time ago. It was common practice back then, especially on coins that grade right around EF or AU. Somebody had a nice looking piece and noticed that it had diminished luster and wanted to "improve" it by giving it's shine back. Like I said before, I've seen Liberty nickels with an old cleaning that looked exactly like this one.

Cleaning offends me more so than most, but even I think you still did fine here. You mentioned not paying more than VF...I'm assuming you payed about $55 - $60. It has been cleaned, but it has also re-toned evenly and the detail is great and I think that price is still a good deal. Coin's worth at least $80 IMO and you'll find people who'll pay more.

Yes, after currency conversion it works out about $60 shipped I paid so I'm happy with it. I'd also agree that if it has been polished it isn't recent.

Think this experience also shows how knowledge of a particular coin helps, I took a bit of a blind mans pop on this really.
