Hello, I am in the home stretch now of assembling a higher grade 7070 type set. It has been a long month's journey with hours of research, both about the coins themselves and about educating myself about the market today. This has got to be one of the most expensive hobbies, as the total cost for completion is probably in the neighborhood of 10K and that is without the gold! I have acquired some very nice pieces, some of which include: an 1803 Half Cent (500 thought extant) in ~EF, an uncirculated Coronet, 3 high end indians, a high end AU Two Cent Piece, some nice EF/AU capped bust coinage, proof Mercury dime, choice MS liberty Standing quarter, EF/AU 1842 Dollar, MS Oregon, among many other quality pieces. I am still missing 2 coins, and they are not the rarest or most expensive (I have plans to buy them on ebay this weekend.) In general, most of the coins are AU+, but with some exceptions (such as a Classic Head Cent in Fine/VF worth paid well over $100 for, and a hideous 1802 Draped Bust Cent in Good.) In addition to these 2 missing coins, I have about 6 strong candidates for upgrade.

Overall, I have come to the conclusion that this set (and the hobby perhaps) is only suited well for the very rich man. I'm not sure if I would have done this set over again, and I may try to liquidate it soon, either selling it as a complete set or having some of the best pieces certified and sell individually. Here are my most recent purchases and their stories (none of which are terribly impressive):

1844 Seated half dollar - New addition to my set! Your opinion? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1844-Seated...p=true&rt=nc

1876 Seated half dollar - New Coin! How do you think this would grade? http://www.ebay.com/itm/27109874319....m1439.l2649

1912-D Barber half dollar - A replacement for a hideous "AG" currently in my possession. I think it has strong definition, do you think it has been cleaned or messed with in any way?

1908 Barber dime - A replacement for a "Good" currently in my folder http://www.ebay.com/itm/11097472408....m1439.l2649

1881 Three Cent Nickel - A replacement for a "Good" currently in my album. http://www.ebay.com/itm/11097477298....m1439.l2649

I would say the 1844 Seated half dollar has likely been polished to within an inch of its life (believe me, I've been down this road before), but the rest look very nice. Even the 1844 Seated half dollar might be a good addition to your 7070 album due to it's great details, however, as long as your not put off by the unnatural shine.

Yeah, on second thought the 1844 Half doesn't seem like the greatest buy. Perhaps I shall return it. I thought a cool idea might be to get at least 1 coin of each from all of the Branch Mints: Orleans, San Fransisco, Carson City, Denver... in addition to one 18th century coin. Anyway, I would like to display them all on this site like a few others I've seen, but I am not great with the camera. I wonder how it would come out using the library's scanner. After sharing them with this great online community, I could either 1) Have the coins certified, and sell them, 2) Sell it intact, 3) Order them all melted down to scrap (It's not fair that these coins live forever, outliving one generation after the next. I get the feeling Lady Liberty is laughing.)

Tip one, collect for fun. If you stick by that, you will enjoy it and maybe won't sell it so fast.

Tip 2 if you want graded coins buy the coins graded vs wasting money grading because what if the coins come back genuine, detailed, etc?

Yeah, it's a huge financial committment. But you've done a great job. Maybe sell, recover some money, slow down, and don't fill holes for awhile. Accumulate only what you love.
