Here is a coin I purchased on ebay at the minimum price of 2355 at the end of September. It is certified by ANACS. What would you say the grade is?   Edited by EddieDiz

BB-190 B-10, with the typical die breaks through the C in AMERICA. More important to me than the grade, though: does anyone else get the impression of a plugged hole at OF? Looks to to have a similar color anomaly lined up on the obverse side.

I'm thinking it received a VF25 details grade for environmental damage. Still a great piece of American history.

Details appear to be VF-35 or so. There is some kind of surface problem, possibly "environmental damage". If there is a plug it was skillfully done, especially on the obverse.
The price would have been "too good to be true" for a no-problem VF-35 piece. I will be interested to see exactly how ANACS described the problem(s).

Oops! In searching for some recent auction prices of this variety in this approximate grade, I accidentally found the record of this very coin's most recent sale (most likely) prior to Eddie's ebay pickup. Won't give away where just yet, or what the description was, unless Eddie is not aware of it and would like to know. |

I`ll wager a guess on the grade.. VF-35 looks to be right to me. Nice old silver dollar!  |

I believe that it has a Details Grade due to the 1 o'clock position on the reverse that may have been worked on, lines up with the obverse at 7 o'clock position that also shows that something was going on in that coins position... I know of one of the top Coin Doctors that specializes in repairing Early Silver Dollars, but hides his work with "bag marks" to cover his work... I had a 1795 Dollar with a large hole in the 12 o'clock position that would have graded at least a 45 without the hole, when the coin was returned, there was no sign of the coin having any type of hole repair due to some added bag marks in the area worked on, and the one thing I didn't like was all the added "bag marks" needed to "blend in" to make it natural looking... If submitted for certification, I wouldn't know how many points the TGP's would deduct with so many bag marks... I ended up breaking even when I sold it on ebay and mentioned the repair in the description. |

This isn't your typical message board. There are many knowledgeable people on here. I am uploading(hopefully correctly) the images of the coin holder. I don't know if it is unusual,but with the top of the head of the bust in the 12 o'clock position,when you flip the holder over the head of the eagle is in about the 11:30 position. |

Slightly rotated reverses are normal. Looks like you got a good deal! That is a nice purchase at a good price. Congrats!

VF35 seems correct. I don't see any environmental damage but I do see some surface staining on an otherwise very attractive coin. From what I see, appears to be an early die state and yes, slight levels of rotation are normal for Draped Bust Coinage.

From the 8/2/2012 Heritage Auctions sale of this coin:
1800 $1 Wide Date, Low 8 VF35 ANACS. B-10, BB-190, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State VII. Several reverse die cracks help attribute the Bolender marriage. The present Choice VF representative is deeply patinated in gray and brown shades. The surfaces display only trivial marks beneath the toning, though mild granularity is noted between 12 and 2 o'clock on the reverse border.(Registry values: P1) (#6888)
Went for $1938.75, including buyer's premium, rather less than other VF-35 examples of BB-190 B-10 they auctioned in recent years. I still think we're seeing more than "mild granularity" between 12 and 2 o'clock, though, although the die rotation makes a through-and-through hole very unlikely.
