I recently purchased some coins that had some attractive toning and I don't want to see them change or start darkening. Will a 2x2 preserve them or should I buy some slabs that are more "airtight"?

Anything that is put between the environment and the coin will impede toning..a flip, 2x2, slab etc. That said obviously some are more protective than other but none of them are airtight. Coins can tone even in slabs but at a MUCH less of a rate and this would be the best way to protect them. I should add that I have had ASE's sit in flips for many years and not have a hint of toning...I have has ASE's sit unprotected on a shelf and the bottom show zero toning while the top was overwhelmed. Hmmmmmm..I wonder if those vacuum food storage bags have PVC in them?

I'm trying my darnest to keep my avatar (Bahama 20c) from turning any more. It's all NT, and would hate to see it get any more so.

Somewhat stolen from BadThad... Place coin in Air-tite, Air-tite in 2x2, 2x2 in archival page, page in binder, binder in Ziploc type bag with desiccant and cleaned sacrificial copper coin. He would say that the more layers, the better.

Foxwoods, I don't think vaccum bags for food contain PVC because that's not food safe. I believe they use PP.

Foxwoods Man, I must be slow today. I didn't catch the PP until you mentioned it. But it's still better than poo poo. No suppression here.
On a serious note, you can take a 2x2 and tape all the edges closed. That should make a nice seal as long as the plastic windows integrity doesn't get broken.

The "sacrificial copper" absorbs all atmospheric garbage that'd tone the other coin?

Quote: The "sacrificial copper" absorbs all atmospheric garbage that'd tone the other coin? That is correct. I have inquired about the same process and use these too in my storage process.

Great topic ndwlegal. I also recently acquired a couple of coins, NGC slabbed wheaties, that have nice toning that I would like to see remain as is. I'd like to know if they are sufficiently protected in the sealed slabs. Bob

guaranteed this will stop all toning or further toning. Or just use a 2x2 and seal all edges well. 3M taped should work.
