Have come across two 10 cent pieces like this recently, the first a 1999 reverse, and the following 2008 obverse.

Any suggestions as to how these occur, and whether there is a specific term to describe them?

Not sure what the cause is FNQ,maybe a long slither chipped out of the edge of the die as it is raised and rough on the surface, but it is fairly common in the 2008 circulation coins,i have 20 UNC 20 cent coins with this & a heap of 5 cent coins as well.

Just a guess.....
The outside of the die has been made slightly too small, so metal pushes out between the die and the rim on the blank.

Perhaps it is simply a very slightly Misaligned Die. Can we see full pics of the obverse and reverse?

I don't think it's a misaligned die. I've seen a few myself and the inner rim goes the whole way around with what appears to be uniform width.

I agree mr T the rim always seems to go right around. Ozcoins explanation is plausible.

My initial suspicions were as ozcoins stated, but I couldn't figure out why a striking die would be smaller than normal. I had assumed, in a somewhat similar manner to blanks, that they were created from tested presets...

I think the font may have changed in 2008 so maybe a related change resulted in some dies being just a bit too small.
This only happens on 2008 coins right?

2008 is the main culprit though

It also doesn't always go all the way around. I've got some where its less than half the coin.
